St. Patrick's Day was the theme for Oak Ridge FCE Club meeting March 17 with Jean Rehak, president, leading the group. Fourteen members and a guest, Eden Tallon, were present.
Marilyn Retherford, devotion leader, read a poem of St. Patrick Blessings.
Barbara Barks, secretary, read the minutes from January and Pat Hecht, treasurer, gave her report.
Betty Dellinger discussed the clothing items for Christmas 2015.
Retherford gave a report on the 2014 fourth-grade Essay and Artwork Contest. Erin Urhahn from Oak Ridge won the Cape Girardeau County and district contests and will go to the state contest.
Rehak announced leadership training will be April 13 at University of Missouri Extension Center.
Child Advocacy Day was April 1 in Jefferson City, Missouri. Melva Floyd made two dolls to be taken to Missouri State Spring District meeting May 7 at the extension center.
Rehak announced Shirley Palen appointed Barbara Barks as head of a committee to plan the event at the quarterly council meeting March 11. Other members are Peggy Barks, Darlene McCain, Judie Herbst, Jackie Brandtner and JoAnn Hahs.
The next autism work day will be June 2. Any and all members are welcome to attend.
Rehak gave two programs from Health Fire Series 13 and 13A Breaking Bones Facts, and Barks gave one on Health Fire Series 8 Mammograms and Pap Smears.
February and March Projects were voted to send a needy family food for Easter.
Pennies for Friendship and the Flower Fund were collected.
The quarterly council meeting of Cape Girardeau County FCE was held March 11 at the University of Missouri Extension Center in Jackson. Shirley Palen, president, was in charge. There were 11 members from five clubs -- Kage, three; Oak Ridge, three; Lamplighters, two; Town and Country, two; and one at large -- present.
Minutes from Dec. 4 were read by Mary Klaproth, and the treasurer's report was given by Rehak. Both were approved.
A letter from Easter Seals was read, thanking the group for the autism blankets, lap pads and neck snakes that were delivered to the center following the autism workshop Feb. 4.
It was reported that a record number were made by the 28 members who worked together that day: 65 blankets, 19 lap pads and six snakes were finished.
A member, Frances Jenkins of the Oak Ridge Club, had spent many hours previously constructing blankets for the members to stuff during the autism work day.
Ten of the blankets are to be given to patients in the Alzheimer's Unit at Missouri Veterans Home. It was announced that the next workday for autism blankets will be June 2.
Barbara Barks, president-elect for 2015, reported on the Feb. 6 county meeting.
Marilyn Retherford reported that the literacy contest was won by a student from Oak Ridge, who read her essay to the group at All Clubs Day.
The Leader Training Day will be April 13 at the extension center. Registration will be at 9:15 a.m.
Klaproth reported for the travel committee that the trip this summer will be to The Muny on June 16. Dinner will be at The Cheesecake Factory.
The Spring District Meeting will be May 7 at the extension center with Cape County Clubs as hostesses. The theme is "Light the Way with FCE." Centerpieces will be made by Town and Country Club and Cheerful Country Doers.
The cost of the noon meal will be $15. Palen appointed a committee to plan the program. Barks is to chair the meeting with members Judie Herbst, Peggy Barks, Darlene McClain, Jackie Brandtner and JoAnn Hahs participating.
The Cape Girardeau County FCE All Clubs Day was held March 23 at the University of Missouri Extension Center in Jackson.
The meeting was hosted by the Town and Country Club from Cape Girardeau County. Darlene McCain, vice president of Cape Girardeau County Club, called the meeting to order with 37 members present. The devotion on friendship was given by Karen Murphy from Town and Country Club.
Mary Klaproth, recording secretary, conducted roll call. Members present were Kage, nine; Cheerful Country Doers, four; Town and Country, 10; Oak Ridge Homemakers, seven; Lamplighters, four; at-large, two; and one from the extension center. Minutes were read by Klaproth, and treasurer's report was given by Jeannie Rehak.
Klaproth discussed the upcoming trip June 16 to "My Fair Lady" and the Cheesecake Factory during announcements.
The trifold display made by Jo Ann Hahs, which won a ribbon at the state convention in October, was exhibited at the meeting.
The student who won the Literacy Contest from Cape County, Erin Urhahn, read her winning essay on "Responsibility." She also won the district contest and will now compete in the state contest.
Mary Gosche discussed a new series of instructional programs on home food preservation to be held Tuesdays at the extension center at $15 a session.
Dates for upcoming meetings were given: District Spring Meeting May 7, which has a theme of "Light the Way with FCE"; Autism workday June 2; and leadership training April 13.
The morning program was given by members of Cape Girardeau County Commission.
Speaking on the use tax and other county issues were Charlie Herbst, District 2 commissioner; Paul Koeper, District 1 commissioner; and Clint Tracy, presiding commissioner.
The afternoon program with Barbara Barks, president-elect, was given by Dr. Jeremy Barnes from Southeast Missouri State University. He gave a presentation titled "Coming Unstuck? Tips on Health and Exercise."
Among many facts about the benefits of exercise, Barks spoke about preventing many major life-threatening diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease and vascular diseases.
He urged adults of all ages to get 30 minutes or more of moderate physical activity on most days of the week.
Membership recognition and pins were also presented. Certificates and pins were presented. Five years: Barbara Barks, Pat Hecht and Sharon Aldredge; 15 years: Linda Sebaugh; 20 years: Lee Anderson; 35 years: Shirley Palen; 40 years: Sharon Bogenpohl and Judie Herbst; 45 years: Roberta Allen, Jackie Kurre and Joan Meyer; and 60 years: Margie Swan. Kage Club was presented a certificate acknowledging 70 years in FCE.
Mary Gosche presented a slide show highlighting the many activities of each club.
The John Guild Chapter, National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, met March 18 at Pacific Hall on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University for a historical program by Dr. Frank Nickel on the new location and extent of collections stored there. This is a local State Historical Society site.
Hostesses were Jan Chamberlain and Jerre Crites. MSSDAR State Conference will be held April 9 to12 at Sheraton Westport Chalet in St. Louis.
