Capaha Scottish Rite Women's Club
The Capaha Scottish Rite Women's Club met at Jay's Smokehouse in Jackson, with 14 members and four guests present. Luella Armstrong presided and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Omega Hawkins, chaplain, voiced the table prayer.
During the business portion of the meeting, a thank-you letter from the American Lung Association was read.
Co-hostesses Violet Reynolds and Freeda Smothers led the group in show and tell.
The next meeting will be May 14 at Delmonico's restaurant with Dennis and Barbara Hurst giving the program on their mission trip to Mississippi to help build a church that was ruined during Hurricane Katrina. The group will not meet this month.
The Zonta Club of Cape Girardeau held its monthly membership meeting March 6 at Bella Italia.
The program was provided by Charles DiStefano, director of Missouri Mentoring Partnership. He thanked the club for its support over the years and provided an overview of services available through the agency.
During the business meeting, plans were discussed for a fund-raiser May 12 at Barnes & Noble and several service projects, including Thursday's Go Red for Women Luncheon and Relay for Life on June 15 and 16.
Jan Ruopp reported that the club's foundation will award five $500 scholarships to female seniors from local high school who exhibit academic honors and participate in service activities.
The Alpha Mu Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met at the home of Marsha Parrish, with Vicki McKinney presiding. Pledge training was held prior to the meeting.
Carole Calvin, vice president, concluded the pledge training and announced there will be a review and test at the next meeting.
A $100 contribution will be sent to the Beta Sigma Phi International Endowment Fund, and $50 will be sent to the State Service Project.
A vote was taken for the chapter woman of the year award. The award will be presented at the All Chapter Founder's Day Dinner on April 23 at the Family Life Center at Centenary United Methodist Church.
Plans were made to the Southeast Missouri State University production of "42nd Street" on April 26. The "girls' night out" will include dinner at Bella Italia at 6 p.m.
Plans were also made to attend the River City Players Dinner Theater production of "Driving Miss Daisy" on May 4. Information was presented about the FCE bus trip to the Muny Opera in St. Louis on July 10 to see "Hello Dolly."
Officers for the new year were elected. They are Bernie Cardner, president; Mary Schwab, vice president; Judie Herbst, recording secretary; Bobbie Woodward, corresponding secretary; Calvin, treasurer; and McKinney, city council representative/extension officer. These officers will be installed at the May 7 meeting.
Parrish presented the program, "The Galapagos Islands." Parrish and her family visited the 19 Galapagos Islands in January. Literature, brochures, hand-made jewelry, scarves and photos were shown.
The next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the home of Dixie Jones.
The 2007 FCE All Clubs Day was held March 26 with Linda Sebaugh, president, presiding. Lamplighters' Club was the hostess for the day.
During the program, Sebaugh asked members to take pictures of club events and clip news items to be used in preparing 2007 state reports. She handed out 2007 grant applications to club presidents.
Dortha Strack had handouts of military mail and fair booth information.
The spring meeting will be Friday at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Doniphan, Mo. Registration will be from 9 to 9:30 a.m.
JoAnn Hahs of Lamplighters' Club suggested making dolls as a county group for Child Advocacy. During the discussion, it was mentioned that dolls of color and boy dolls are needed for distribution. Mary Gosche and Sebaugh will select a day and notify clubs.
Mary Klaproth confirmed the FCE will make a trip to a St. Louis Cardinals baseball game May 24. The game starts at 12:10 p.m., and the bus will leave Cape Girardeau at 8 a.m. The deadline for making reservations is May 2. The cost will be $55.50.
Martha Slaten, Southeast Missouri FCE district director, reviewed a recent state board meeting in Jefferson City, Mo. She announced the state meeting will be Sept. 19 through 21 at the State Fair Motor Inn in Sedalia, Mo., and the national meeting will be Aug. 10 through 12 in Omaha, Neb. She also mentioned Lynn Maples, state president, will be going to Finland this summer. She will have information at district and state meetings.
Paul Nenninger, a representative from Seniors and Lawmen Together, presented a program for older drivers. He mentioned the objective is to promote safety and that the Cape Girardeau area has been chosen as one of five groups for a pilot program.
The Cape Girardeau County third place literacy winner read his winning essay.
The Jumpers, a homeschool group from Cape Girardeau and Jackson, entertained the group with a show of jumping rope.
The membership committee recognized members with pins for 10 to 60 years of membership to FCE and Homemakers.
Gosche presented a PowerPoint program on Cape County FCE members and their work. She then announced the clubs of the year. Town & Country FCE received first place; Lamplighters received second; Kage and Oak Ridge tied for third; and Wonderworkers received honorable mention.
The Lamplighters FCE Club met March 15. JoAnn Hahs, president, conducted the meeting.
Three members were recognized for their years of service: Teresa Hinkebein, 10 years; Judy Myers, 15 years; and Beverly Meyer, 25 years.
After the meeting, 45 clothing protectors were made by members. These will be delivered to the Missouri Veterans Home.
The FCE District meeting will be April 26 in Doniphan, Mo. Registration of $10 is due by April 12.
Hinkebein and Meyer will make the arrangements for the annual Oak Ridge Community Garade Sale from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 5. Sharon Bogenpohl, Gayula Volz and Verla Mangels are in charge of Books for the Newborn on May 15.
Judy and Dale Myers thanked the club for the proceeds raised for their daughter, Natalie Goyette, by the quilt of love project.
Hinkebein presented a program on mental health.
Roll call for the April meeting will be an apron show and tell. Dorothy Hahs will give a program on quick, healthy meals, and JoAnn Hahs will be the hostess.
The Nancy Hunter Chapter NSDAR met March 28 at the Cape Girardeau Public Library. Dorothy Points, regent, opened the meeting with the rituals. Ten members and one prospective member were present. Co-hostesses were Lois Spalding and Ruth Lang.
The meeting was in honor of history month, with Dr. Frank Nickell as the guest speaker. He spoke about the roles that fences played in our settling of America.
Lang, treasurer, reported the treasury after a donation to the Stars & Stripes Musem at Bloomfield, Mo. Catherine Allison, secretary, read the minutes. Both reports were approved.
The Southeast District will have a meeting Sept. 20 in Sikeston, with local DAR chapters attending. A request for cookies has been made and the group agreed to furnish six dozen cookies toward refreshments.
The 108th State Conference will be held April 20 through 22 at Holiday Inn Executive Center in Columbia, Mo. They have requested a donation of $10 for decorations. Pat Strom made the motion to donate the money, and it was seconded by Sharon Rowland. The motion carried.
LaFern Stiver made a motion to give $50 to the state delegate toward a trip to the state conference. It was seconded by Catherine Allison. The motion carried.
The next meeting will be on April 25 at the Cape Girardeau Public Library.
