The Young Americans 4-H Club was called to order by Tori Schweer on March 17 at Grace United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau. The pledges were led by Haley Ehlers and Alex Eftink. Roll call was answered by showing your green for St Patrick's Day. March birthdays were recognized and the club sang "Happy Birthday" to Clayton Kirchdoerfer. Kirchdoerfer and Ehlers led the club in singing "I've got the joy in my heart."
Lydia Cameron read the February minutes and Gary Schweer made a motion to approve, seconded by Kirchdoerfer. Anthony Strack gave the treasurer's report and Tricia Kirchdoerfer made a motion to approve the report with a second from Lindsey Allen.
Bonnie Strack reported on the club's new T-shirts. The slogan on the back will be "Lead, follow, or get out of the way." An order form with sizes and color preference was circulated.
Several plans were discussed. The club will host a trivia night fundraiser for the American Cancer Society on April 9 at the lower level of the University of Missouri Extension Office.
The club will go to the SEMO Aquatic Center for a pool party April 17. Club members will go to the Ratcliff Nursing Home at 3 p.m. April 23 to color or play bingo with the residents.
The following members gave illustrated talks: Conner Propst, parts of the Boer coat; Clayton Kirchdoerfer, types of halters; Haley Ehlers, tack; Alex Eftink, the dirt on dirt -- sand, silt, clay; and Tricia Kirchdoerfer, the food pyramid.
The meeting was adjourned, with motions made by Propst and seconded by Eftink. Kandy Peek led the club in playing shoe scramble. Refreshments were courtesy of the Allen and Schweer families.
The Cape Girardeau County FCE Quarterly Council meeting was held March 3 at the University of Missouri Extension office in Jackson with Inez Statler, president, presiding over the meeting. There were 12 members and one guest present.
Darlene McCain, from Town & Country FCE Club, had the devotion, "keep your fork."
The minutes were read by Mary Klaproth and the treasurer's report was given by Jeannie Rehak.
The group discussed the booths for the SEMO District Fair. Setup will be Sept. 9 this year.
Klaproth gave a report on the Child Advocacy Day on March 31 at the Truman Building at Jefferson City, Mo. There were about 203 dolls to give out.
Klaproth also gave a report on the upcoming tours that will be taken this year: Aug. 1 -- The Muny to see "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" with dinner at Zia's in The Hill area of St. Louis; a trip to the St. Louis Cardinals verses New York Mets baseball game Sept. 22; and another trip is being planned.
Marilyn Retherford gave the literacy essay/poster contest report. The first place winner for the District was Betty Beussink and she also took first place for the state. She receives a $50 bond from Cape County FCE. There were 61 essay's from four schools.
JoAnn Hahs gave report on the Autism Blankets sewing. Hahs and Klaproth delivered 21 blankets, 10 lap pads and three neck wraps to the autism center Feb. 15.
Hahs also received the leader honor roll award.
Dortha Strack sent five thank-you cards and four sympathy cards out.
Also she reported that the Young American 4-H Club is going to have a trivia night April 9 at the Jackson Extension Office at a cost of $10 per person.
The Spring District FCE meeting will be held April 26 at Sedgewickville.
St. Mary Council of Catholic Women held their meeting March 17 in the Huels Room. Kate Schaefer led the ladies in praying "A prayer for those who live alone."
Commission reports were given:
Organization: Diane Schaefer suggested scrapbooking as a fundraiser. Judy DeClue will check on availability of the gym and has contact names, as does Mary Greaser. Tables will rent for $15 with proceeds going to the food pantry.
Community: Sister Lucille Zerr requested canned vegetables be brought to the next meeting or they can be dropped off at her office.
International: Nancy King suggested members may be able to meet at St. Vincent de Paul Church to work on ugly quilts. Last month the program was given by Kathy Berkbigler, who displayed an ugly quilt and told of their ongoing project for homeless.
Dolores Gibbar reported that four bereavement dinners were served.
The spring assembly will be held April 15 and 16 in Springfield, Mo. There will be six representatives from St. Mary Cathedral parish. Sister Rita Schonhoff will pick up personal items and cleaning supplies from members. The gift bag will be a "Pamper Yourself" basket.
Kate Schaefer has information on NCCW membership. She is on the nominating committee for Region 7. A new president, vice president and secretary are needed.
Dolores Gibbar, Becky McLean, Diane and Kate Schaefer and Nancy King will serve the reception after the Chrism Mass on April 20. Zerr requested help for the reception after the Easter Vigil.

The group will not have a meeting in April. The next meeting will be held May 19, at which time the group will have the annual May crowning. Strawberries and cake will be served.
