American Legion Auxiliary

Members of Louis K. Juden American Legion Auxiliary met April 13. Lunch was provided by Frieda Howard, Vergie Templeton and Gladys Lawrence.

Caryn Michel, president, conducted the business meeting. The minutes from the March meeting were accepted, and the treasurer's report will be on file for audit.

Barbara Yallaly, Fern Schlimee and Marilyn Ritter went to Sikeston, Mo., for a Girls State briefing. Girls came from all over Southeast Missouri including five girls from Cape Girardeau. More than 700 favors were taken for Girls State, which will be held in June.

A donation will be sent to the Cape Girardeau Police Department for its participation in the Special Olympics Torch Run.

A letter was read inviting the group to the Red House Ball to be held June 25. The proceeds will go to the Red House Foundation.

Dorothy Klein read an article titled "Echo Taps" on the tribute planned in New York City for Armed Forces Day on May 21. Active duty military personnel and veterans will be honored.

Peggy Blaylock, Americanism chairwoman, plans to give a certificate to each student who participated in the Americanism essay contest.

At the May 11 meeting, women veterans and Gold Star mothers and members will be honored. Female veterans from the Missouri Veterans Home will be guests. Also, the American Legion Auxiliary from Jackson will be guests.

Buddy Poppy Day will be May 13. Members will report at the Legion hall for assignments. There will be a ham and bean meal for participants. Iola Amelunke has made a doll with poppies that she will enter at the state convention poppy contest.

A number of auxiliary members were guests at the veterans home volunteer banquet. Ritter volunteers at the Cape John J. Pershing Outreach Center and will attend its banquet on May 2. She has a total of 1,000 volunteer hours.

Kage FCE Club

The Kage FCE Club met April 14 at the Cape Girardeau Senior Center. Verna Downen was hostess. Martha Slaten's international report has won first place in the state.

Some of the members are continuing to clean eyeglasses for residents at the Lutheran Home, and most of the members have been given the name of a resident to whom they are writing at least once a month. Barbara Marshall reported that she and Linda Farrow collected 246 signatures on March 19 in the "Tune Out Violence" campaign.

A basket of kitchen items is being prepared for a benefit auction to be held Saturday to help Jesse Shenimann, who was injured in an accident.

Jobyne Daume read a note received from a serviceman in Iraq. Verna Vogel gave the program on "Dealing with difficult people."

The next meeting will be held by Edna Hey on May 12.

Good Shepherd Ladies Guild

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Ladies Guild met April 11 to officially open the newly remodeled church kitchen. Members brought supplies and needed items for the kitchen shower.

Marilyn Ritter directed a six-member band, led by majorette Dianne Meyr. Other members of the band were Frankie Allison, Ruthanne Hanebrink, Dorothy Schuessler and Jo Ann Bock.

Amber Kuehn, president, conducted the business meeting with Briggitta Tinsley, treasurer, and Ruthie Boxdorfer, secretary, giving reports.

Hanebrink reviewed activities of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League. The annual pie sale will be held May 1 between worship services at the church. Proceeds from the sale will go for sponsoring boys and girls to Camp Sunshine this summer.

Schuessler reported on the current fund-raising project -- handmade beaded bracelets that symbolize Psalm 23. The idea for the project was introduced by Emalyn Fritzke. Working on the craft committee are JoAnn Hilpert, Kuehn, Boxdorfer, Allison and Ritter.

The program was an orientation of the new sacristy from Laverne Fiehler, chairwoman of the altar guild, and a tour of the expanded kitchen facilities.

Hostesses for the meeting were Janine Pfanstiel, Dorothy Pinkston and Ruth Degenhardt. The next meeting will be the Mother's Day friendship salad supper at 6:30 p.m. May 9.

Town & Country FCE

The Town & Country FCE Club met on April 14 at the home of Judy Johnson. Lois Seabaugh, vice president, led the meeting.

Mary Klaproth read two notes of thanks received from the Lutheran Home for the Easter Bunny visit to residents and New McKendree United Methodist Church in Jackson for a memorial for James Johnson, brother of Sue Jones.

Plans were finalized for the bake sale at the Poplar Bluff Air Show to be held May 7. Members who will work at the bake sale are Darlene McCain, Inez Knott, Doris Wilkinson and Jones.

Bingo prizes will be delivered to the Lutheran Home in April, with Shirley Heise in charge of arrangements.

National Day of the Family will be May 15. Members will contribute Golden Books to mothers with newborns at Southeast Missouri Hospital.

Klaproth reported that 541 signatures were obtained for the "Tune Out Violence" campaign. She also reported that the club received second place for All Club's Day in the Club of the Year category.

Margie McAnally presented a program on the APPLE Project, and Johnson presented a program on Family Roots.

Club Out will be at 6:30 p.m. April 28 at Cracker Barrel.

The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. May 12 at the home of Carolyn Thompson.

Oak Ridge After-School 4-H Club

The Oak Ridge After-School 4-H Club met March 30 in the elementary school library with 16 members, two leaders and one guest present. Dakota Oehl presided over the meeting, with Emily Beard and Trevor Dillard leading the songs and Tessa Mangels and Morgan Smith leading the pledges.

The president reported on fund-raising sales. The club has adopted a manatee named Dana and donated $100 to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in honor of Josh, the club vice president. The rest of the proceeds will be donated to the Salvation Army.

The club plans to present a program on four-wheeler safety to Oak Ridge Elementary School and hold a family picnic at the end of the year.

Candice Seyer gave a report on making sugar eggs for Easter.

Hobbs Chapel UMW

The Hobbs Chapel United Methodist Women met at the church on April 5. Pat Renner presented the program describing her ministry to the female prisoners at Cape Girardeau County Jail.

The group continued plans for the chicken and dumpling dinner to be held Saturday, the mystery trip on May 21, UMW Sunday on May 22 and Day Apart on June 11.

Teresia Sinn will be hostess for the May meeting. June Warder will present a program on pledges.

Literary Club

The GFWC Thursday Literary Club met March 10 at Delmonico's in Jackson. Willa Dean Propst, president, presided over the business meeting. Loretta Atkins presented the treasurer's report. Propst reported the club received an acknowledgement from Girls Town of Missouri for a monetary donation that was made.

Kalli Gibbs, a sophomore at Jackson High School, represented the club at the GFWC Sophomore Pilgrimage held April 11 and 12. She is the daughter of Kent and Jean Gibbs of Jackson.

The club will donate a book to the Jackson City Library in memory of Dorothy Illers, a club member for 73 years who recently died.

The next meeting will be at Delmonico's on May 12. Mayor Paul Sander will present his annual report regarding the status of the city, and Gibbs will share her experience of the Sophomore Pilgrimage.

Alpha Mu Master

The Alpha Mu Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met at the home Vicki McKinney. Linda Metheny, president, conducted the meeting.

Officers for the new year are: Margaret Little, president; Carole Calvin, vice president; Mary Schwab, recording secretary; Bobbie Woodard, corresponding secretary; Marsha Parrish, treasurer; and McKinney, city council representative.

A vote for Woman of the Year was held. The award will be presented at the annual Founders Day Banquet.

McKinney presented a program on Easter traditions. She was assisted by Mary Schwab and Marilyn Schwab.

The next meeting will be at the home of Parrish.

Cape County AARP 4041

The Cape Girardeau County Chapter of AARP 4041 met April 4. Dr. Frank Nickell presented a program titled "The New Cape Girardeau." One of the facts presented was how Cape Girardeau has grown every 10 years since 1860.

AARP will have a Social Security forum on Friday at Grace United Methodist Church.

At the next meeting on May 2, volunteers and the calling committee will be honored.

There will be a day of service at the Missouri Veterans Home on May 12.
