Members of Tilsit 4-H Club are shown making weighted blankets and lap pads for children with autism on Jan. 15. There were 29 club members and 17 adult volunteers who participated in making 33 blankets and 13 lap pads. They had a total of 216 1/2 volunteer hours and used approximately 350 pounds of fabric to stuff the blankets. Cape Girardeau County FCE

Cape Girardeau County FCE All Clubs Day was held March 28 with the Oak Ridge FCE Club serving as hostesses. Inez Statler, president. Ruth Petzoldt, member of Cheerful Country Doers FCE Club, gave the devotion titled "Bearable and Beautiful," closing with a prayer. Verla Mangels, member of Lamplighters FCE Club, led the group in singing the Club Collect. There were 36 FCE members in attendance with five guests including Shirley Welch Carlin, Ellen Duty, Brandi Farris, Liz Fish, Southeast District director, and Margarita Merget, guest speaker.

Statler reviewed the spring district meeting letter with the group giving copies to all clubs. The meeting will be April 26 at the Sedgewickville United Methodist Church, hosted by Bollinger County. Oak Ridge and Town and Country FCE Clubs are each responsible to furnish a table decoration for the meeting. Each Cape Girardeau County FCE Club will bring two auction items.

Bailey Beussink, a fourth-grade student at St. Vincent de Paul School in Cape Girardeau, read her essay on caring. She received first place in Cape Girardeau County and first place in the Southeast District. She is the daughter of Deane and Kari Beussink.

The program on Spain was presented by Merget, Spanish professor at Southeast Missouri State University. It was illustrated with a PowerPoint presentation. Merget was born in Barcelona, Spain, and lived there for a number of years before moving to the United States.

A covered dish luncheon was enjoyed with fried chicken furnished by the Oak Ridge FCE Club.

For the afternoon program, Nelda Crader, vice president, read the book "S is for Show Me Missouri."

Judie Herbst and Karen McLane presented years of membership recognition to the following members: 10 years to Jeannie Rehak and Crader of Oak Ridge FCE Club and Linda Farrow of the Kage FCE Club; 15 years to Marilyn Retherford of Oak Ridge FCE Club; 25 years to Opal Collins of the Kage FCE Club; 35 years to Melva Floyd of Oak Ridge FCE Club; 40 years to Barbara Schaffner of the Kage FCE Club; 45 years to Billie Criddle of Oak Ridge FCE Club and Dorothy Hahs and Gayla Volz of the Lamplighters FCE CLub; 50 years to Mangles of the Lamplighters FCE Club; and 60 years to Ruby Hitt of Oak Ridge FCE Club.

Mary Gosche showed slides of some of the work done by each club and awarded Club of the Year to Lamplighters FCE Club. Town and Country FCE Club received second place. Lamplighters FCE Club was recognized for being an organized club for 45 years.

Thanks were given to the Oak Ridge FCE Club for being in charge of All Clubs Day.

Cape Girardeau CWU

The Cape Girardeau Area Church Women United met April 1 at Sargent's Chapel Lutheran Church near Sedgewickville, Mo. Great Company of Women Who Proclaimed the Good News bingo game was led by Melba Bailey. Pennies used were donated to the Fellowship of the Least Coin.

Shirley Patterson opened the meeting with 13 members present. Minutes were read and approved, and the treasurer's report was given. A thank you was received from state treasurer Connie Williamson for the $150 donation to state. Discussion was held on making a larger donation in the name of Irene Dugger to a facility in south Cape Girardeau. Dolly Jewel and Carol Simon will look into it. Vera Koen noted the CWU now has 52 members.

The World Day of Prayer service was held the morning of March 4 at Zion UMC in Gordonville and in the afternoon at First Baptist Church in Jackson. Joan Sebaugh questioned whether an evening service in lieu of the morning one would yield a greater attendance. This was discussed and will be brought up before next year's event.

Angel Productions will once again hold their Easter event at the Kiwanis Park in Cape Girardeau. This is a free event for children ages 1 through 12, and many volunteers are needed. If you can help, contact Sheri Johnson. There were 500 children at last year's event.

Volunteers are also needed for Scripture readings at the Way of the Cross on Good Friday, which will begin at Old St. Vincent Church in Cape Girardeau. Martha Sanderson and her husband helped last year and will probably do so again.

May Friendship Day will begin at 6 p.m. May 6 at Maple United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau. Board members will bring a large covered dish, and the meat will be furnished by Koen. There will be a short program, and the scholarship award will be presented. Posters were given to the different church members present.

There was some discussion as to nominees for the 2011 Human Rights Award. Nominations are needed prior to September in order to choose and order certificates and pins.

The CROP Sale and Luncheon will be July 15. Posters and tickets were distributed.

The next Bible study and board meeting will be at 9 a.m. June 3 at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau.

Southeast B&G Chapter of MAA

The Southeast Black & Gold Chapter of Missouri Alumni Association April 4 met at the MU Extension Center in Jackson. There were four board members present, Tom Frasher, Roger Guyot, Jill Kohut, and Larry Simon, and a guest, Richard Proffer.

Simon gave the treasurer's report in the absence of Melody Hagans. The balances in both the regular account and scholarship account are unchanged from last month.

Frasher reported that the planned networking event for unemployed and underemployed college graduates had been canceled for the second time. There was only one person signed up.

The June 16 student picnic was discussed and picnic check list was reviewed. The check list gives the responsible person for each picnic item and activity. Frasher reported that there are six $5 gift cards left over from last year's picnic. Simon will contact Melissa Miller regarding her responsibility to ensure we have Tiger Stripe Ice Cream in individual containers at the picnic. Frasher will contact Stephanie Heffernan regarding picnic invitations. Post card invitations sent to the parents of the students this year. The 28 scholarship applicants using the contact information listed on their scholarship applications will be contacted. Simon reported that the Bank of Missouri will be making a donation to help cover picnic expenses.

In the absence of Hagans, Simon reported on the MAA $4,000 scholarship judging and selection. A point system was used this year to judge the entries and select the winner. Hagans sent a list of our selections to the MAA. Many thanks are extended to Hagans and the committee members for their work in judging and selecting the winner and runners up.

Frasher reported that the chapter has been approved for a $500 MAA grant for the chapter's proposed diversity project. 100 tickets will be purchased for a movie showing at Cape West 14 Cine and distributed to the Family Resource Center and the Cape Area Big Brothers and Big Sisters. A Thursday evening in May, either May 5 or May 12, is the target date for the movie. Simon agreed to contact the Family Resource Center to get their input regarding the movie selection and date.

Frasher gave a report on the Column's Requirements status. Three new members are needed for the year to satisfy our "Responsibility" Foundation Activity. Frasher will follow up with Heffernan regarding "Tradition" credit for donating two tickets to the bowl game in Arizona.

Upcoming elections for Chapter offices was discussed. Frasher, Kohut, and Simon agreed to seek another term in their positions. Hagans will not seek re-election as treasurer. After the meeting, Guyot said he would seek the position of Treasurer.

The next board meeting will be at 6 p.m. May 2 at the MU Extension Center in Jackson.

New McKendree UMW

The New McKendree United Methodist Women met on April 5 in church fellowship hall. Gladys Nitsch, vice president, led the group in reciting the UMW Purpose to open the meeting.

Gale King, secretary, read the minutes from the March meeting. The minutes were approved.

Marilyn Fronabarger, treasurer, gave the treasurer's report. The treasurer's report was approved.

Amy Cook, mission ribbon coordinator, gave a report on Mission Ribbons. She asked the unit for money so that she could buy Mission Ribbons at various district meetings so that she could have more ribbons on hand. Eglena Davis moved to give Amy $30 to buy ribbons. Doris Dace seconded and the motion passed.

Nitsch thanked June Engel and Elwanda Corbin for all the work they did in shopping for groceries for the Lenten Cluster Service. She also thanked Engel for her leadership in making the event a great success. She also thanked all who helped Engel.

Julie Combs reminded everyone to be thinking about the 100 Mile Yard Sale on May 26 through 28. She encouraged all to be collecting items for the sale.

United Methodist Men will have a fish dinner Saturday. The UMW will provide 18 cakes for the fish dinner.

Members-at-large hosted the Jackson Manor birthday party Tuesday and the Esther Circle will be the host on May 3.

Margie Crites was asked to be responsible for flowers in the church on UMW weekend May 21 and 22.

Engle announced that there will be a chicken and dressing meal served April 17. Serving will begin at 11 a.m. The price is $7 for adults. Proceeds from the meal will be given to the Bell Choir for a new bell.

Dace announced that she has made greeting cards from wall paper and old linen fabric. She is selling the cards to make money for the bell choir.

The Esther Circle won the attendance prize with eleven members present.

The Wesleyan Circle, led by Willa Dean Propst, presented the program.

The Esther Circle served refreshments.

The next meeting will be at 9:30 a.m. May 3, with the Esther Circle in charge of the program and the Wesleyan Circle will serve refreshments.

Nancy Hunter NSDAR

The Nancy Hunter Chapter NSDAR met March 23 for a buffet dinner at the Geraldine Hirsch Community Room at the Cape Girardeau Public Library. Members were asked to bring early times, historic dishes to be shared.

Guest Glenda Brock Milan attended the meeting.

The treasury's and secretary's reports were accepted.

Charlotte Slinkard's granddaughter plans on joining our group as a junior member.

Hillary Caldwell sent a thank-you note for the award of being chosen as a Good Citizen winner of Nancy Hunter DAR.

The next meeting will be held at 1:30 p.m. April 27 in the Penzel Conference Room at the library with showing the DAR Museum DVD.

Tilsit 4-H

Tilsit 4-H Club met March 3 at Immaculate Conception Church in Jackson with 35 members and 21 others in attendance. Morgan Bangert presided over the meeting. Dylan Muench and Kaitlyn George led the songs, and Sara Golson and George led the pledges.

The following demonstrations were given: Caleb Aufdenberg, shake it up with orange bars and Zachary Aufdenberg, orange no bake cookies.

Reports were given on Clover Kids and junior leaders. Everyone was reminded to wear their new 4-H shirts to promote 4-H.

Megan Peters was accepted as a new member.

Members were asked to save 20-ounce water bottles and 2-liter soda bottles for a project for 4-H Camp.

Teresa Birk presented a program about Heart for Africa, Celebrate Hope Nursing Drive.

The George family provided refreshments.

Steven Peters led a game following the meeting.
