The Nancy Hunter Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met Jan. 24 at the Cape Girardeau Public Library. The program was "Story of the Underground Railroad" given by Merle Denele. Two new members were inducted, Linda Sue Kemp and Mary Darby.

American Legion Unit 63 Auxiliary

The American Legion Unit 63 Auxiliary met Feb. 14 with 13 members present. Catherine Allison opened meeting with a prayer.

The treasurer's report and minutes were read and both approved as read.

Shirley Young took the unit's donations of clothing to Scott City Elementary School. They were very appreciative.

A tentative date of May 19 is set for Poppy Day.

District 14 American Legion Auxiliary Emergency Fund is being called "Shining a Light for our Sisters." Members are each asked to donate 48 cents to take to the May district meeting.

Unit 63 Auxiliary Executive Committee met Feb. 14 to review the Constitution and By-Laws. Donna Hinze read the changes which were approved and will be sent to District for approval.

Vickie Watling, S.A.L.T. representative, encouraged members to attend the Law Enforcement Memorial at 6 p.m. on May 24.

Barbara Yallaly reminded members to attend the American Legion birthday party at 6 p.m. on March 21. Educators, firemen and policemen will be honored. Members are asked to bring a side dish or dessert.

Reba Strayhorn will deliver donated items to the Amen Center.

The next meeting will be at 11:30 a.m. March 14 Grecian Steakhouse for lunch and business meeting to follow.

Oak Ridge Homemakers FCE

The Oak Ridge Homemakers FCE Club met on Feb. 20, at the Elks Lodge in Jackson. The hostess was Barbara Barks. The meeting was called to order at 1:10 p.m. by Jean Rehak, president. Marilyn Retherford gave the devotion, "Finding God" by Craig Easley. Roll call was answered by 14 members who revealed their favorite Valentine candy and told of their first memory of their childhood. Some interesting responses were entertaining as well as remarkable.

The membership in the club is now up to 23, including some spouses and children. The minutes of the December meeting were read and approved. There were no minutes for January because the meeting was cancelled due to the weather and flu epidemic. The treasurer's report was read and approved.

One half of the Pennies for Friendship collection was sent to the state and one half kept for the club's use. A sympathy card was sent to the Kage FCE club on the death of Dortha Strack. A gift card was sent to June Peetz, who was in the hospital for over a week. Barks read a Thank You card from the Veterans Home for the 21 afghans the club members donated. They also sent a photo of the presentation.

Under old business, it was announced that the Leadership training scheduled for January was cancelled and rescheduled for April 26. Barbara Barks, Peggy Barks and Rehak plan to attend. Topics include The Energy Saving Game, Taking Care of You -- Happiness, Boost Your Brain Power, Outsmart the Burglar, Square Foot Gardening, and Hidden Fats and Sugar. The club was reminded of helping the Veterans at the Veterans' Home on Monday night, Feb. 26, with Bingo. The club donated $25 for the bingo at the Missouri Veterans Home on Feb. 26 in memory of Alvin Davie, brother of Betty Dellinger. In addition, an extra $75 was donated by individual club members to make a total of $100 for Bingo prizes. The club also received more than $500 on their theme baskets sold at the winery in December as well as a percentage of the winery's profits for that date. The money was spent on toys for the Christmas giveaway.

All Clubs' Day will be March 26 and members will take dolls for Child Advocacy Day in Jefferson City, which will be April 3. Debbie Baughn displayed a thank-you letter from a member of the Coast Guard for the Christmas card he received as a result of the Military Mail in which the club took part, sending more than 1,000 cards. There is a possibility that the club will be able to apply to a special organization for money to help with the postage. More information will available later.

More than 100 adult and children's coloring books, as well as almost 1,000 crayons and pencils and other craft items, were collected and delivered to the Jackson Manor for the entertainment of the residents there as a February project. No date has yet been set for the Spring District Meeting in Perry County. Retherford reported that the Child Literacy Essay Contest for 4th graders had only 31 entries last year and the question of whether to continue the contest or not will be raised at the March meeting. A motion was made by Vicki Scherer and seconded by Barbara Barks that instead of a gift exchange at Christmas for the members of the club that each member bring one $10 gift or two $5 gifts to include in the club's Christmas giveaway at the Elks Lodge. Motion carried. Jackie Brandtner proposed that the club investigate the possibility of some of the club members partipating in the Salvation Army bellringers activity next Christmas as volunteers since the Salvation Army's volunteers' numbers are down. The suggestion will be brought up at the All Clubs' Day meeting.

After a game, and the presentation of the hostess prize, the meeting was adjourned at 2:30 p.m.
