The February meeting of the John Guild Chapter of the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution was held at the meeting room above the Jackson City Library. Shirley Young, regent, conducted the meeting. Hostesses were Morgan Lake and Lorilee Short.
The program/slide show, given by Barbara Stroder, was titled "Teaching the Civil War: A Junior High Perspective."
A nominating committee was appointed to present a slate of officers to serve 2012-2014. The next meeting will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the library. The program will be given by Lake on the 75th anniversary of junior membership.
The February meeting of the Lamplighters FCE was held in the home of Jackie Kurre, president. There were 12 members that answered the roll call by either sharing a bread recipe or a sample of their favorite homemade bread. Verla Mangels shared a devotional thought titled "The Meaning of a Snowflake."
During the business session, the minutes were read and approved and the treasurer's report was given and placed on file. A thank-you note and valentine from the Mississippi Valley Therapeutic Horsemanship was shared with members. Committees for All Clubs Day are Jo Ann Hahs, Linda Freeman and Judy Myers, and the club's game night members, Sharon Bogenpohl, Linda Sebaugh and Mangels, were reminded of their duties.
The proposed revisions to the bylaws were approved. The membership approved a donation of $200 to help sponsor an Oak Ridge High School student to Boys State. A donation of $25 was given to the Safe House for Women. Mangels reviewed the plans for the upcoming 2012 FCE tours to St. Louis to The Muny and to Stages, and to Land Between the Lakes for the Carl Hurley Show.
Members were reminded that the Extension Center would be the setting for the following events: Leader training workshops at 9:30 a.m. Monday; All Clubs Day 9:30 a.m. April 2; and the autism weighted item work day 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 9.
Linda Sebaugh presented the program on and shared examples of easy bread making.
Grace United Methodist Women Mission meeting was held March 6, with 14 people present. President Barb Miller conducted the meeting. Mary Ann Pensel opened the meeting by bringing to members' attention the mission focus for this month. The Susannah Wesley Center in East Prairie, Mo., was one of the missions mentioned. Others were educational programs in Nigeria, rights of women in Pakistan, Bible school and general education programs in Peru, empowering young women and elderly people in Portugal, and the Wesley House in Omaha, Neb.
Lorene Welch presented a new book for the reading program, "The Noticer." The basement sale was the center of old business. Profits were good and exceeded those of last year. As previously discussed the proceeds will be divided between the SEMO Food Bank and the church needs. Miller asked circle chairwomen to bring the subject of spending the money for the church to their groups for suggestions. Margaret Zieba brought forth the subject of remodeling the women's bathroom, which had been discussed previously. Miller announced that she had taken books and games from the basement sale to the Boys and Girls Club of Cape Girardeau and they were well received.
A committee was formed to meet regarding ideas for fundraisers. It will meet in April at Miller's home and will be ready to make a recommendation at the May meeting.
The spring district meeting on March 24 in Sikeston, Mo., was announced. A report was given on plans for the spring mother-daughter banquet to be held at 6 p.m. April 3. An executive meeting will be held that morning but no general meeting. Miller closed the meeting with happy announcements. Crystal Laiban was a first-time attendee. Wilma Copeland, a longtime member, was celebrating a birthday. A UMW group has been formed in Hayti, Mo.
Pensel gave the program on prayer and self-denial with group participation. A simple soup luncheon prepared by Sandra Shandy and Zieba followed.
The Southeast Black & Gold Chapter of Missouri Alumni Association met March 5 at the MU Extension Center in Jackson. Board members Tom Frasher, Roger Guyot and Larry Simon and guest Richard Proffer were in attendance. Jill Kohut participated by speakerphone, and Stephanie Heffernan participated by video computer hookup.
Guyot gave the treasurer's report. $956 was added to the scholarship account.
Heffernan reported that MU chancellor Brady Deaton was to appear at the Drury Lodge in Cape Girardeau to speak about the budget and financial challenges facing MU. All area MU graduates will be notified. He was to be accompanied by Dianne Drainer and Todd McCubbin.
The recent Founder's Day event was discussed. The event raised $956 for the scholarship fund, which includes donations of $100 each from the Bank of Missouri and Frasher.
Frasher reported that there were 27 applications received for the $4,000 MAA scholarship. Melody Hagans and the education committee will review and judge the applications and report the results to the MAA by the March 25 deadline.
The upcoming Legislative Day at the Capitol in Jefferson City, Mo., was discussed. It is scheduled for April 3. Proffer will represent the chapter at the event. He said that transportation to the event is available, leaving from the Extension Center early in the morning on the day of the event.
The scheduled student picnic was discussed. It will be held 6 to 8 p.m. June 14 at Shelter No. 4 in Cape County Park North. Heffernan will send email notifications to all True Tigers from the area. Postcard notifications will be sent to the parents of all True Tigers and incoming freshmen. Last year's picnic checklist was reviewed and will be followed this year. The food is already lined out. Heffernan will order and deliver the Tiger Stripe Ice Cream. Frasher will take care of gift cards and gift bags. Heffernan will speak about the MAA, and Kurt Heischmidt, last year's scholarship winner, will invited to say a few words.
The diversity project movie night was discussed. 100 tickets will be bought for the Big Brothers/Big Sisters group to attend. The movie "Rango" was chosen to be shown at the Cape 14 Cine at 6 p.m. May 2. Simon will purchase and distribute the tickets and host the event.
Heffernan reported that the chapter is on target to again meet the Capstone requirements. Three more new members are needed to fulfill the membership requirement.
The need for reporting our MAA volunteer hours was discussed. Heffernan requested that effective immediately, chapter members report all time spent on any chapter volunteer activities, including driving time, to her by email.
Guyot represented the chapter at the MU Extension annual meeting Feb. 21.
Simon reported that for the fourth time the chapter will nominate John Lichtenegger for the Tiger Pride Award.
The next meeting will be at 6 p.m. April 2 at the MU Extension Center in Jackson.
Sarah Ross was hostess March 8 when the Kage FCE met at the Cape Girardeau Senior Center for the regular monthly meeting. President Dortha Strack presided. Dortha's tip of the day: Use celery leaves as a garnish, in soups and salads, and as an herb in place of parsley.
A check was presented to the Heart Association on Feb. 29 at West Park Mall.
Shirley Palen and Judie Herbst reported that the "Show Me Missouri" games will be ready for distribution April 2. One hundred games will be presented to the local fourth-grade classes.
Members were reminded to send a card each month to a resident at Fountainbleau Lodge for the new club project, "Friends Forever Fountainbleau."
Members were reminded of the following dates: leader training is Monday; All Clubs day is April 2; the autism workshop is April 9; and the spring district meeting is April 24.
Reservations were taken for All Clubs Day at the Extension office in Jackson, and those attending were reminded to bring an item for the silent auction. Reservations will be taken at the next meeting for the Spring district meeting in Farrar, Mo.
A discussion was held concerning the club's participation in the SEMO District Fair. The club voted to discontinue participation.
Several members reported that they had read at Jefferson School this month.
The program "Heirloom Seeds" was presented by Ramona Brinkopf.
Barbara Schaffner will be hostess at the next meeting at 11:45 a.m. April 12 at the Cape Girardeau Senior Center.
The Cape Girardeau FCE Council meeting was held March 1. President JoAnn Hahs opened the meeting. The devotion was given by Mary Klaproth with Town & Country FCE Club, a poem titled "The 10 Commandments of a Long and Peaceful Life."
Secretary Klaproth read the minutes from council meeting held Dec. 1 and Jean Rehak read the treasurer's report. Both were approved.
Roll call was taken with 13 members present.
All FCE Clubs Day will be April 2, with registration at 10 a.m. and the program starting at 10:30 a.m. Lamplighters FCE Club will be hostess. The devotion will be given by Cheerful Country Doers, the program will given be by Kage Club member Judy Herbst, and recognition/awards will be given by Lois Seabaugh of Town & Country FCE.
Those FCE members who will be recognized with a certificate or a pin are: Francis Jenkins, five years; Ruth Petzoldt, Jean Rehak and Judith Myers for 20 years; Beverly Meyer for 30 years; Carolyn Thompson, Linda Thompson and Teresa Hinkebein for 45 years; Jane Clark for 50 years; and Mary Dee Ford for 65 years.
Klaproth gave a report on Child Advocacy Day, which is March 28. She also gave a report on the following FCE Tours with three days trips for 2012: a trip to see "Chicago" at The Muny in St. Louis on June 26; a trip to see the "Sound of Music" at Stages in Kirkwood on Aug. 8; and a trip to see Carol Hurley, a humorist at the Kentucky Opry in Draffenville, Ky., on Sept. 8. Reservations are being accepted at this time.
Leadership training will be held at 9:15 a.m. Monday at the University of Missouri Extension Office in Jackson. The following classes will be offered: Women and Heart Disease at 9:30 a.m.; Household Hints at 9:30 a.m.; Made in the USA at 10:30 a.m.; and Paper or Plastic at 10:30 a.m.
Dortha Strack announced the deadline for reservation on the SEMO District Fair booth for FCE Clubs will be April 1.
As part of new business, president JoAnn Hahs had a vote on whether to continue with the autism project for Cape County FCE Clubs. All voted to continue for another year. The next scheduled meeting will be April 9 at Extension office.
It was announced the spring district meeting will be held at Salem Lutheran Church April 24 in Farrar, Mo., with a cost to cover the meal at $10 per person.
The New Salem United Methodist Women met March 7 at the Branding Iron in Jackson for lunch. The meeting was held after lunch at the home of Georgia Stearns. Margie Roberts called the meeting to order with ten members present.
The secretary's report was given by Dorothy Hahs and the treasurer's report was given by Betty Hahs.
Verla Mangels gave the devotion. Shirley Grebe and Mangels were to go to Day Apart in Sikeston, Mo.
Roberta Seabaugh and Vanita Hahs are on the planning committee for the Vigortone fundraiser in October.
Members discussed purchasing a picnic table for the church. Jackie Kurre will check into that.
The first-wquarter pledge will be donated to the Red Cross.
Kurre presented a program on the World Day of Prayer 2012.
Refreshments were served by the hostess.
