The Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158 in Jackson met Feb. 8 at the post with Commander Gary Kamp presiding.
The minutes of the last meeting were approved as written. Richard Aguilar, finance officer, gave the financial report.
Harlan Siebert reported that the city of Jackson says the post can no longer have a temporary sign outside the hall. The sign needs to be permanent. Siebert has applied to the city to have this done. A motion was made to have the trustees do this. The motion was seconded and passed.
Bill Poe announced that the Legion birthday banquet will be held Thursday.
Siebert announced he was in contact with VFW Post 3838 on a fire extinguishing system for the kitchen. Motion was made to continue with correcting the situation and seconded and passed. During the discussion it was pointed out that the post had received a $1,300 donation in the past for the purpose of fixing this situation.
Jim Nelson announced contributions made to the scholarship fund were from the American Legion Auxiliary 158 in memory of Inez Starzinger; and from Post 158 club room participants and Bob Hartle, both in memory of Cotton Meyer.
Bill Sullivan reported on the club room. A bar from VFW Post 3838 has been installed. He informed members that $1,100 had been donated to help offset the cost of the fix-up of the club room.
A motion was made for a second vote on a $1,500 donation to the senior center. The motion was seconded and passed.
A motion was made for the second vote on approximately $10,000 for new steps. A motion was made to change the location as purposed. The motion was seconded. A discussion followed. The amendment motion failed and the original motion passed.
The Laureate Alpha Rho chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met at the home of Edna Hey on March 3. Erma Vaughan, president, announced that Founder's Day this year will be hosted by the Jackson chapter, Epsilon Tau.
Rosanna Whitnel reported on suggestions on hospitality gifts to be made by this chapter for the 2005 state convention. The suggestions will be presented at the next convention meeting to be held Monday.
Dorothy Miles read from the Beta Sigma Phi handbook on how chapters are named in the Greek alphabet. She also read the Beta Sigma Phi traditions.
Vaughan announced that the next meeting will be the Easter meeting and will be held at Pasta House on Thursday. Members will elect new officers at the April 7 meeting to be held at the home of Margaret Crites. The installation of these officers and the new pledge ritual will be held on May 5 at the home of Mary Ann Nenninger.
The last meeting of the year is tentatively planned for a trip to River Ridge Winery in Commerce, Mo., on May 19.
A cultural program was presented by Bonnie Hennessy on the history of St. Patrick's Day. She also read riddles and a brain teaser.
The Cape Girardeau County Chapter of AARP 4041 met March 7. An informational forum was presented regarding the upcoming election of the Cape Girar-deau School Board. Candidates present were Debra Mitchell-Braxton, Creighton A. Gould, Charles O. Haubold, Steven N. Trautwein, Sharon L. Mueller, Glenn (Skip) Smallwood Jr., and Charles Bertrand.
The Roberts Homemakers club met March 9 at Riverside Regional Library in Jackson after lunch at Mazzio's Pizza. Pat Terry, vice president, presided over the meeting.
It was voted to donate $25 to the Salvation Army. Members also brought food for the food pantry.
The next meeting will be held April 13 at Riverside Regional Library after lunch at Delmonico's.
Kage FCE Club met at the Missouri Extension Center in Jackson on March 10 with Jobyne Daume as hostess. A letter from Donna Taake, 4-H specialist, was read. She was thanking the club for its contribution to the new 4-H building to be constructed at Arena Park. Dortha Strack, president, also read a note received from a serviceman.
Kage Club members will be at Wal-Mart Supercenter in Cape Girardeau on Saturday to obtain promises to "tune out violence" on April 5.
Members signed up to help clean patients' glasses at the Lutheran Home and some additional plans are being worked out for the "Friends Forever" activity at the nursing home.
Reports of the recent FCE Council meeting were heard and plans for the upcoming All Clubs Day to be held March 28 were finalized.
Strack reported having sent 33 pairs of knitting needles, 24 crochet hooks and some yarn to Romania. These items had been brought by club members last month.
Those who are to attend the leader training sessions on April 11 were reminded of this event at the Extension Center. Announcement of the district FCE meeting on April 19 at Sedgewickville Methodist Church was given and several members plan to attend.
A program about hummingbirds was given by Daume. Shirley Palen and Judie Herbst presented a program on shadow applique including a number of pieces they have made.
The next meeting will be at the Cape Girardeau Senior Center with Verna Downen as hostess.
The United Methodist Women of New McKendree United Methodist Church in Jackson met March 1 at the church fellowship hall with Marilyn Fronabarger, president, presiding over the meeting.
The Wesleyan Circle was in charge of the program. Shirley Patterson introduced Laurie Hill, BSN, RN, with Generations Family Resource Center at Southeast Missouri Hospital. Hill presented a program on women and heart disease.
Tandy Wendel and Fronabarger thanked members for their help in preparing and serving the successful chili dinner on Feb. 20.
Amy Cook, Pat Lynn, Patterson and Wendel attended Legislative Day in Jefferson City, Mo., which was held on March 7 and 8.
The UMW finalized plans to serve a sack lunch for District Day Apart to be held at Old McKendree Chapel on June 11. Handbooks will be ordered to be used by Fronabarger and several other officers.
Fronabarger announced that the spring district meeting will be held in Charleston on April 9. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m.
The next meeting will be at 9:30 a.m. on April 5. The program will be presented by the Dorcas Circle and the Esther Circle will furnish the refreshments. Members are to bring items for the SEMO Alliance Against Violence.
