The Exchange Club of Cape Girardeau met Jan. 4 and Jan. 18 at Port Cape Girardeau.
At the Jan. 4 meeting, Monte Kyle, president, read a letter from Cape Girardeau Middle School asking for a donation so they could go to the Lake of the Ozarks for a singing concert. The letter was tabled. He also read a letter from Max Yeager, president of Lincolnland District, thanking the club for mailing news letters. Phil Ballas, district representative of Area 12, also requested to be on the list.
At the Jan. 18 meeting, a prospective member, Robert L. Hardy, was introduced. Merril Simmons and Robert Hardy gave a report on the district bowling.
Cletus Todt will present the program the Feb. 15 meeting.
Hospitality Day Celebration of Church Women United was held Jan. 23 at Gordonville United Methodist Church.
Vera Koen gave the treasurer's report and the 2005 budget was discussed and approved. Joyce King, president, presented the revised by-laws for review and discussion. There were no major changes made, and they were approved.
King presented the slate of the 2005 officers. They are Michele Moon, president; Barbara Yallaly, vice president; Marge Janssen, recordng secretary; Martha Sanderson and Koen, treasurer; and Helen Lohmeier, corresponding secretary. There were no nominations from the floor and the slate of officers were elected by acclamation. Janet Hopkins, pastor at Hobbs Chapel United Methodist Church, installed the officers.
The group will be helping the American Red Cross with a blood drive at 20 S. Mount Auburn Road on March 12, 23 and 25. A donation was collected for refreshments that will be served to donors.
Layette kits will be collected for Church World Service during the year and will be taken to the Awareness Luncheon in September. Missouri Family Food Boxes will also be collected.
Thomas, membership chair, reported that the group needs 30 more members to equal the 2004 membership total.
A memorial service for deceased members Lawana Wulfers and Rosemay Whittard was led by King. A donation in their memory was given to the American Red Cross.
World Day of Prayer will be held March 4 at Westminster Presbyterian Church and St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Cape Girardeau and First Baptist Church in Jackson.
The United Methodist Women of New McKendree United Methodist Church met Feb. 2 in the church's fellowship hall. Marilyn Fronabarger, president, opened the meeting and presented the program on the call to prayer and self denial.
During the business meeting it was decided to hold a chili dinner on Feb. 20 following the 11 a.m. worship service. Committee reports were given by the following: Pat Lynn, social action; Wilma Summers, mission ribbons coordinator; and Edith Eggers, program resources. It was decided to purchase handbooks for local and district officers. A new method of selecting members to receive special mission pins was adopted.
Fronabarger thanked all those who helped in United Methodist Weekend during the three services. Pat Schreiner, Shirley Patterson and Amy Cook served as liturgists. Barbara Hartle gave the children's sermon, and many of the members served as ushers.
Fronabarger gave a summary of the work of the UMW. Members were reminded of the upcoming Legislative Day on March 7 and 8. Tandy Wendel, Cook and Lynn will represent New McKendree.
The Cape Girardeau Evening Lion's Club met recently with a representative from the St. Louis-based James S. McDonnell USO giving the program. After the presentation, the club donated $100 to the USO.
Members will also buy items from a "wish list" to be used at the USO's Lambert Field location, where all services and amenities are offered free to all military personnel and their families.
USOs receive no government or United Way support and they depend entirely on private donations.
The Xi Nu Phi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met Feb. 1 at the home of Sharon Hinkebein.
Information was received about the Beta Sigma Phi International funds. Recipe request forms were distributed for the 2005 cookbook.
The Valentine banquet will be held Thursday.
A report on the 2005 convetion was given by Debbie Balsamo and Cathy Pancoast.
Hinkebein presented the program on castles.
The next meeting will be Tuesday at the home of Mary Stuart.
The Lamplighters FCE Club met Jan. 20 at the home of Teresa Hinkebein. Joann Hahs, president, presided over the meeting.
Each member signed up for the committees needed to carry out the work and activities of the year's events. Input was sought on which service projects the club might undertake.
It was decided to send telephone calling cards, socks and other requested items to Marines who are stationed in Iraq with Lance Cpl. Russ Meyer, son of member Bev Meyer.
Members will also bring bags of candy to each meeting for the Green Bear Project, which attendeds to sexually abused children.
It was reported that the club sent $100 to Hunger Plus Inc. for dried soup mixes for the people of Romania.
The bylaws were read and activitiy books for the new year were reviewed.
The next meeting will be Feb. 19 at the home of Jackie Kurre.
