St. Mary CCW

St. Mary Council of Catholic Women held their meeting on Jan. 19 in the Huels Room. Dr. K.S. Andrews and Wanda Leimer presented the program on arthritis.

Thank-you notes were read from the Rev. Patrick Nwokoye for the Christmas gift and invitation to the dinner; from Mary Meyer for the quilt; Lucille Zerr for the expressions of sympathy on the death of her sister and for the Christmas gift. Also notes were read from the Clayton family for the bereavement dinner for Elaine Bolen, and Catholic Relief Services and Help a Child for donations received.

The minutes of the December meeting were read and approved.

Attendance: Kate Schaefer, president; Mary Ann Hennecke, vice president; Pat Eftink, treasurer; Imelda Nenninger, secretary; and Judy DeClue, past president.

Eftink distributed copies of the treasurer's report for month ending Jan. 19.

Commission reports:

Service: Zerr reported that during October, November and December, 1,254 families, totaling 3,635 individuals were given food at the food pantry. This was during two hours a day on 19 days. The need is increasing and volunteers are needed. To volunteer, call Zerr.

Dolores Gibbar reported that two or three bereavement dinners were served.

Diane Schaefer moved that the council donate money for altar supplies at this time. It was seconded by Zerr. The motion carried.

The Region VII Spring Retreat will be held at 8 a.m. March 3 at St. Joseph Church in Scott City beginning with prayer service.

The Diocesan Council of Catholic Women's Spring assembly will be held in Cape Girardeau on April 20 and 21. St. Mary's CCW will furnish bottled water and granola bars for the hospitality room. Slightly used purses are requested. DeClure and Diane Schaefer are looking for ideas for a theme for the silent auction gift. Zerr has asked Vilet Robert and Evelyn Buhs to prepare the dinner for the board meeting on April 19.

A new president and vice president will be needed in May as neither Kate Schaefer nor Hennecke will be able to serve a second term.

Catholic Campus Ministry will have a wine tasting fundraiser on March 3 at Deerfield Lodge. There will be a silent auction and entertainment. Tickets are $25.

The next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Feb. 16 in the Huels Room.

Shirley Whittard and Judy Stricker were thanked for serving the refreshments.

Nancy Hunter NSDAR

The Nancy Hunter Chapter NSDAR met Jan. 25 at the Cape Girardeau Public Library. Charlotte Slinkard gave the historical program on recognition of 200th anniversary of the War of 1812. She presented a program of the reconstruction of the museum and all the history of furnishings. A discussion was held about all the work done. Among the pictures hung on the walls of past presidents, two were from Cape Girardeau, Allene Groves and Charlotte Slinkard.

The minutes were read by secretary Catherine Allison, catching up on months of absence due to illness. The treasury report of $199.17 was given by regent, Sheila Holloway, in absence of the treasurer. Both were accepted.

A discussion was held about dedicating the Nancy Hunter Chapter plaque since it was removed from the old government courthouse on Broadway to the new Rush H. Limbaugh U.S. Courthouse on Independence Street with the date pending.

Plans are being made to attend the next Nationalization Day held at the courthouse May 1.

The Missouri DAR has accepted and put on a plaque at the state capitol in Jefferson City, Mo., new names of men who served in Revolutionary War. They are John Apperson, Moses Ferguson Sr., Peter Hartle, Joseph Murphy and Samuel Watson, dedication was held Oct. 28 on the first floor of the rotunda.

The death of Mildred Wertz was announced. She was 95 when she died Jan. 22.

The next meeting will be held at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 22 in the Geraldine Hirsch Room at Cape Girardeau Public Library. The Good Citizen Awards will be presented. Refreshments will be served after awards.

Girardot Chapter

The Girardot Chapter met Jan. 17 at the VFW Post 3838 in Cape Girardeau. Speaker was Leslie Watkins, CAP business/computer instructor at Metro Business College and also a member of the chapter. She presented "Magic Tricks with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access."

On Feb. 21 Joan Roth from the Metro Business College will present a program on interior design.
