Young Americans 4-H Club

The Feb. 17 meeting of the Young Americans 4-H Club was called to order by Tori Schweer. It was held at Grace United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Gary Schweer, and Tyler Kirchdoerfer led the 4-H Pledge. Roll Call was answered by "name your favorite Valentine candy." There were 17 members and 12 adults attending the meeting.

The February birthdays -- Ellie Foote and Brenda Allen -- were recognized. Clayton Kirchdoerfer then led the club in singing "Bingo."

Twelve members attended conservation night Feb. 10 at the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center. Suet hangers were made out of wire hangers. A recipe for suet was handed out. Other bird feeders were made out of pine cones rolled in lard and covered with seed and other items.

Caitlin Allen, Lindsey Allen, Ellie Foote, and Mia Foote attended the outdoor cooking program Feb. 12 at the nature center for a foods meeting. They made omelets, banana boats, chocolate cake and s'mores. Katie Wilson reported on a sewing meeting Jan. 15 where she made a pin cushion.

Seven members delivered Valentines to the residents at Ratcliff Nursing Center on Feb. 13.

Plans are being made for the Trivia Night Fundraiser to be held on April 9 at the Lower Level MU Extension Center in Jackson.

Julie Eftink presented a health and safety program. A form of the Jeopardy game was played with emergency preparedness questions. A first-aid kit was won by Caitlin Allen and packets of health and safety items were given away to the members.

Gary Schweer gave an illustrated talk on muzzle-loading, and Anthony Strack gave one on combine headers. Tori Schweer did a demonstration on "cookies in a jar" and Lindsey Allen gave one on "strawberry fruit dip."

Ellie Foote passed out a Valentine word search, and refreshments were provided by the Reitzel and Propst families.

Lamplighters FCE Club

The Lamplighters FCE met Feb. 17 at the home of Roberta Seabaugh. President Karen McLane called the meeting to order and had members repeat the Pledge of Allegiance and the Club Collect. The hostess gave a devotional entitled "more than coincidence." Sharon Bogenpohl led the group in singing "You are My Sunshine." 15 members and one guest, Dora Jones, responded to the "share a pretty button" roll call.

After the minutes and treasurer's reports were read and placed on file, members voted to approve the club's by-laws and signed-up for the 2011 club committees. It was reported that three members attended the County Year End Reports Day at the Extension Office on Feb. 8. Jo Ann Hahs will be doing the County Report for County Successful Project. The Feb. 14, "Love given by the pound" Autism workday netted 21 completed weighted blankets, 10 weighted lap pads, and three shoulder snakes. These items were delivered to the Touchpoint Autism Center Feb. 15.

Four members will be attending leader training March 21: Jackie Kurre, Roberta Seabaugh, Gayla Volz, and Verla Mangels.

Members were given a chance to review the All Club Day Achievement Score Card and a discussion followed about how best to score and judge club work. Linda Sebaugh reported that members had donated 6,767 volunteer hours and driven 6,608 miles doing those projects during 2010.

Seven "Storybook Ladies" read to the Oak Ridge Elementary School children in February: Jackie Kurre, Jo Ann Hahs, Karen Eaker, Linda Freeman, Teresa Hinkebein, Judy Myers, and Verla Mangels. McLane and Hahs will represent Lamplighters at the March 3 Quarterly Council Meeting to be held at the University of Missouri Extension Center.

It was announced that Hahs was named to the 2010 University of Missouri Extension Leaders Honor Roll.

The following reminders and announcements were made: "Eating from the Garden" is a way to teach fourth-grade children nutrition and gardening skills, anyone interested in receiving training to be a volunteer in this 13-lesson curriculum will need to attend the training meetings held 7 to 9 p.m. March 1, 8, 22 and 29 trainings at the Extension office; A workday for autism weighted items will be held 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 14 at the University of Missouri Extension Center; Lamplighters' March meeting, The Brawns and Beauties Big Top, will be held March 19 at New Salem Methodist Church; and the NAFCE 75th annual conference will be held July 14 through 17 in Denver.

Linda Sebaugh gave a program on how low-calorie meals benefit and affect our lives. Bev Meyer led the group in making button rings.

John Guild Chapter DAR

The John Guild Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution met Feb. 16 at the Jackson City Library. Morgan Lake and Lorilee Short were hostesses.

Following the business session, a program on DAR schools and DAR approved schools was presented by Lake who has visited the schools.

DAR owned schools: Tamassee DAR school, founded in 1919, is in South Carolina and Kate Duncan Smith School, founded in 1924, is in Alabama.

DAR approved schools: Hillside School, founded in 1901, is in Massachusetts. Hindman Settlement School is in Kentucky. Berry College, founded in 1902, is in Georgia, and the Crossnore School, founded in 1913, is in North Carolina.

All DAR chapters in the United States support the schools through financial contributions and gifts of needed items.

The next meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. March 6 at The Gordonville Grill.

St. Mary CCW

St. Mary Council of Catholic Women held their first meeting of the year on Feb. 17 in the Huels room and enjoyed homemade soups. The January meeting was canceled due to bad weather. Sister Lucille Zerr led the prayer before meal.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.

Kate Schaefer and Nancy King will help Pat Eftink with the Mardi Gras dinner to be held March 8 in the cafeteria.

The CCW will change to the three commissions: Service, Spirituality, and Leadership.

Judy Stricker reported on the Diocesan meeting: The Spring Assembly will collect cleaning supplies, personal hygiene supplies, and durable medical equipment to take to St. Anne Center in Ellington, Mo.

Dolores Gibbar reported four bereavement dinners have been served this year.

A day of recollection will be held 8:30 a.m. to 2:15 on March 26 at New Hamburg, Mo.

The DCCW Spring Assembly will be held on April 15 and 16 at the Ramada-Oasis Hotel in Springfield, Mo. Diane Schaefer, Judy DeClue and King will prepare a basket or item for the grab bag.

Diane Schaefer will be acting treasurer while Pat Eftink is out of town.

The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. March 17 in the Huels Room.

Kate Schaefer closed the meeting with a prayer to Mary Immaculate,
