The American Legion Auxiliary met Feb. 11 with 23 members in attendance. Hostesses were Grace Coy, Donna Hinze, Linda Kern and Dorothy Klein. Cupcakes and ice cream were provided by Vergie Templeton's daughter-in-law in honor of Templeton's 96th birthday.
A get-well card was signed and sent to Patsy Kimbrel, who is living at the Lutheran Home.
The minutes and treasurer's reports were accepted as read. Members voted to send a $100 contribution to United Way of Southeast Missouri.
A discussion was held about Girls State, with Edna Smith as the contact person; the Girl Scout troop cookie day sale at Hobby Lobby; the auxiliary's current membership, which stands at 124 paid members; and available applications for nursing scholarships.
Linda Kern, educational chairman, delivered 48 boxes of tissues, 15 hand sanitizers and 12 jumbo Clorox wipes to Jefferson Elementary School. These items were suggested by the school.
Valentine gifts were given to the lady veterans at Missouri Veterans Home. The group also discussed a gift of thanks to the auxiliary's Gold Star mother, Hester Gray.
Chaplain Catherine Allison gave a tribute to the four chaplains who gave their lives aboard the USS Dorchester when it was bombed and sunk in 1943.
It was announced that Vickie Wilson, district president, is sponsoring a poker run with proceeds to go to Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield.
The Town and Country FCE Club met Feb. 12 at the home of Mary Klaproth. Darlene McCain, president, conducted the business meeting. Klaproth gave the devotion.
A thank-you note was read from Cottonwood Residential Treatment Center for Christmas treat sacks and items for a Valentine's Day party that were taken to the center Feb. 12. Pennies for "Coins for Friendship" were collected.
McCain and Klaproth attended the meeting at the University of Missouri Extension Office regarding completing Cape Girardeau County reports to mail to the state. Plans were discussed for All Clubs Day, which the club will host March 23. Plans will be finalized at the March 12 meeting.
A report was given on the work day making weighted blankets, which Karen Murphy, Donna Woolsey, Klaproth and McCain attended. A total of 65 weighted blankets, 19 lap pads and eight snakes were completed. Ten weighted blankets were delivered to the veterans home for the Alzheimer's unit and the remaining items were taken to the Easter Seals/Autism Services in Cape Girardeau. The next work day will be June 2.
Coming events were announced, including the council meeting at 7 p.m. March 5 at the extension center. Some members signed up for the spring leader training to be held at the center April 13 at 9:30 a.m. The spring district meeting will be May 7 at the center, hosted by Cape Girardeau County.
The program on the "New Missouri Mix" was presented by Lois Seabaugh. She gave each member two cups of the New Missouri Mix along with a number of recipes to be used with it. In addition, "Hearth Fire No. 35, Person to Person ... Here's To A healthy Heart" was discussed, with all members participating.
Club out will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Dexter Bar-B-Que in Jackson.
All members will bring dolls for Child Advocacy Day to be held April 1 in Jefferson City, Missouri, to the next meeting and also bingo prizes for the Lutheran Home. The next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. March 12 at the home of Karen Murphy. Klaproth will present the program on immunizations and screenings.
Members also exchanged Valentines.
