Xi Nu Phi

The Xi Nu Phi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met Feb. 3 at the home of Tammy Monia. Information was given to members about the Beta Sigma Phi Endowment Fund proposals and projects. Recipe request forms were distributed to those who want to submit a recipe for next year's Beta Sigma Phi cookbook.

A "game night" for couples will be held Saturday at the home of Sandy Ross. Members are to bring finger foods.

A discussion was held on the 2005 state convention to be held in Cape Girardeau and what the chapter will be responsible for.

The Valentine's Queen was voted on and was revealed at the Valentine Banquet held Feb. 13.

The program, presented by Monia, was on Groundhog Day.

American Legion Post 158

The Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158 in Jackson met Jan. 13. Commander Virgil Whitener opened the meeting. Chaplain Larry Koehler gave the prayer.

Gary Kamp introduced Cape Girardeau County Prosecuting Attorney Morley Swingle. He gave a program on his research and development of his book, "The Gold of Cape Girardeau." He provided a Civil War history lesson on this area of Missouri.

Chaplain Koehler gave a memorial for deceased members of the post during the year of 2003: Jack Bixler, John Stueve, Clemens Freese, James Skinner, Carlton Crain, Edgar Hecht, Michael Conley, Richard Meyr, Kenneth Howard, John Godwin, Paul Meyr, Charles Morton, Robert Abbott, Jimmy Yarbro, John Wilhite, James Litzelfelner, Bill Labruyere, William Eakins, Homer Johnston, L.R. Bollinger, Norman Sebastian, Glen Friedrich, Charles Lawson and Donald McClearn.

The December minutes were approved as written. Whitener gave the financial report for Richard Aguilar, who was unable to attend the meeting.

P.M. Kurre reported 580 members. A total of 52 have not paid dues for 2004. Kurre has the forms available for any World War II and Korean War members to apply for recognition from the state of Missouri.

Harlan Siebert thanked Harold Landgraf for repairing some of the masonry on the building. Siebert also reported contributions to the Post 158 memorial scholarship fund for an ailing Jim Nelson. Other donations were from: Marilyn Priest in memory of Grace Meehan; American Legion Auxiliary in memory of Curtis Hoehne and Norman Sebastian; and Bob and Adell Hartle in memory of Ray Bollinger.

Leon Laurentius gave the honor guard report. Jack Latimer asked the post to put a mailbox on the south end of the building so Boy Scouts could drop off used or damaged flags. He also announced he has applications for several different scholarships available for members' children.

Laurentius gave the house report for the month and the year end. He also gave an income summary for the years since he took over in 1995. He gave the number of times the hall has been donated to a community event or activity and thanked Albert Beussink for building a case to hold the Budweiser team and wagon in the dining room.

Ken Koehler made a motion the post should support the baseball team again this year. Motion was seconded and passed. He made a second motion that the post pay $636 for insurance for the two teams. This motion was also seconded and passed.

Leonard Adams reported the first complete year of holding dances has been a success.

Whitener asked David Hitt to report on the phone card situation for the troops. He reported 62 members of the Jackson guard unit received phone cards prior to their departure. He particularly gave credit to Marsha Haskell, customer service representative for Southwestern Bell. Hitt suggested that Haskell be invited to a meeting and a certificate be given to her. It was also recommended that a roster of the troops be obtained and they be contacted for Legion membership.

Whitener reported to members that the executive committee recommended sending $100 per month to the USO at Lambert Airport for the next 12 months beginning in February. Motion was made, seconded and passed.

Whitener read several thank-you letters and notes the post has received.

New Salem UMW

The New Salem UMW of New Salem United Methodist Church of Daisy held their regular meeting in the home of Betty Henry.

Each member brought valentines. They were signed by all members and sent to friends of the community.

The Vigertone meeting that the UMW will cook dinner for was changed to March 4 instead of today.

After some discussion on the World Day of Prayer meeting, it was decided to invite other churches. It was also decided to buy two griddles and pancake turners for the church kitchen.

The program, "Got Just a Minute," was given by Colleen Lukefahr. Secret pal gifts were handed out.

Scottish Rite Men's Club

The Scottish Rite Men's Club met Feb. 11 with a Valentine's Day theme for decorations. The ladies served pot luck, while the men provided the meat and drinks.

Johnny Slinkard, second vice president, opened the meeting. Anniversaries and birthdays were honored. Special notice was given to two members and their wives: Cecil and Flo Blaylock for celebrating their 68th anniversary, and Al and Joan Mason for celebrating their 55th anniversary.

Speaker for the evening was Janet Smith from Applications, Personal Papers, Legal, Environment and Paperwork Service. They represent Bolllinger, Scott, Perry and Cape Girardeau counties and are located next to the Cape Girardeau Post Office.

The next meeting will be on March 10 on the lower level of the Masonic Lodge on Broadway.

Rose Hills Garden Club

Rose Hills Garden Club met for lunch on Jan. 26 at Port Cape Girardeau.

Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved as well as the treasurer's report.

Bonnie Kipper, president, gave a report on the landscaping and planting of shrubs at the Little Red House in the Spring.

The program was given by Joe Sherinski, who shared "Five Characteristics of an Effective Gardener."

New club officers were installed by Loretta Dodd: Sue Austin, president; Kathy Marchi, first vice president; Becky Zeiski, second vice president; Dori Lage, secretary; Kipper, treasurer; and Joyce Chirnside, corresponding secretary.

It was announced that the Master Gardens Plant Sale will be April 17 at Arena Park.

Kage FCE Club

The Kage FCE Club met Feb. 12 at the Cape Girardeau Senior Center. Joan Meyer was hostess and gave a devotional titled "The Unexpected."

Edna Hey reported having mailed 82 valentine cards from club members to military personnel. It was announced that Inez Statler had applied for and received a HEED grant for the club to help support the Mississippi Valley Therapeutic Horsemanship Program.

The following upcoming dates were announced: County FCE Council meeting on March 4; Spring Leader Training Session on March 8; and All Clubs Day on March 22.

Everyone was urged to get signatures for "Tune Out Violence" on television for April 5.

Jobyna Daume and Linda Farrow presented the program on emergency preparedness.

The March 11 meeting will be held at the home of Barbara Marshall.

VFW Ladies Auxiliary

The Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 3838 met Feb. 12 at the post. Debbie Griffin presided. Committee reports were read and a reminder was given to continue saving Campbell Soup labels.

Bingo at the Missouri Veterans Home will be held Feb. 28. Volunteers are needed.

Due to the weather in January, the district meeting and youth award dinner was canceled. It will be at noon on Feb. 29 at the post. Members are urged to attend.

It was reported the Valentine's Day dance for cancer and AIDS research was a huge success.

Steak night will be March 6. Volunteers and desserts are needed.

The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. March 11 at the post.

Town & Country FCE

The Town & Country FCE Club met at Mary Klaproth's home on Feb. 12. The meeting was called to order by Darlene McCain, president.

Klaproth read the devotional, "My Valentine Wish" from the book "Ideals." Thank-you notes were read from Safehouse, Cottonwood Center and the Salvation Army for donations made by the club.

The club delivered cupcakes and soda to Cottonwood Center as the valentine project. Donations of $25 each were given to the American Heart Association and United U-9 girl's soccer team.

The club voted to have a booth at the SEMO District Fair again this year. Club Out will be at Cracker Barrel on Feb. 26.

Programs were presented by Linda Thompson on "Making a Home Healthier" and Carolyn Thompson on "Making Bath Salts." All members received a package of bath salts.

Several members signed up for the FCE trip to the Fox Theatre in St. Louis on April 17.

The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. March 11 at the home of Shirley Heise. Sue Jones will give a program on low-maintenance landscaping, and Thompson will give a program on meeting with a flair.
