Kage FCE
The Kage FCE Club met Feb. 9 at the home of Barbara Schaffner. Dortha Strack gave tips of the month for quick-bread baking success.
Members signed up to clean eyeglasses at the Lutheran Home through March 9 and were reminded to send Valentine cards to their "friends forever" residents.
Plans were discussed for All Clubs Day which will be held March 27 at the Cape Girardeau County Extension Center in Jackson. Kage FCE will hold the event.
Martha Slaten gave a report on Child Advocacy Day that she attended in Jefferson City, Mo., on Jan. 31. More than 200 dolls for child advocacy were delivered to state legislators.
Joan Meyer gave the program, "My pyramid -- steps to a healthier you." She also gave tips for healthier dining out.
The next meeting will be hosted by Slaten on March 9.
The Cape Girardeau Area Church Women United met Feb. 3 at First Christian Church for a Bible study and board meeting. Darla Snider of First Christian Church gave the Bible study and background on women of South Africa who are writing the three special programs that all CWU celebrate during the year.
Michele Moon, president, opened the meeting. The minutes were read and approved. Martha Sanderson gave copies of the treasurer's report to be discussed.
Maj. Mary Thomas of the Salvation Army reported that she and Debra Tracy are on a committee planning for the mayor's prayer breakfast which will be held on May 4 at LaCroix United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau. All churches are being asked to participate in providing finger food. She will bring more information to the next meeting.
A thank-you note was received from Young Life for the contribution from the group. Church World Service acknowledged the amount of $761.25 that was received from local churches for monies they collected for Blanket Sunday. The cost of the blankets were $5 each, and 193 blankets were bought to be used in disaster relief areas.
World Day of Prayer will be held at 9 a.m. on March 3 at Evangelical United Church of Christ in Cape Girardeau. The theme will be "Signs of the times." Joyce King and Sanderson will be in charge. Jackson World Day of Prayer will be held at First General Baptist Church at 1 p.m. the same day.
Moon reminded the group of the CWU State Assembly in Jefferson City on March 13 and 14. Jim Sanderson will be driving the Grace United Methodist Church van to transport those attending. Registration forms were passed out and will need to be turned in by Feb. 27.
Tracy and King went to the Cape Area Family Resource Center to work with the women who have a craft day every Tuesday. They made loop hot pads that will be taken to the State Assembly. Anyone who is interested in helping can come at 10 a.m. on any Tuesday to help with a project.
A blood drive will be held at the American Red Cross Center on Mount Auburn Road on March 27, 29 and 30.
Dolly Jewell has materials to be used for Blanket Sunday at the various churches. She has samples of the blankets that can be checked out to show the congregations. A fishing net was shown as another item that CWS provides to people who fish for their food or their living. She also reported on Festival of Sharing, which will be the second weekend of October at the Sedalia State Fairgrounds. This will be the 25th year for the festival. The quilt auction has raised $662,776 over the past 24 years.
The next meeting will be the World Day of Prayer on March 3.
The Xi Nu Phi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met Feb. 7 at the home of Linda Biri. She gave a program on the history of beautiy aids and passed out homemade lotion.
Valentine secret pal gifts were exchanged. The chapter decided to donate $50 to the Beta Sigma Phi International fund, which will benefit different research organizations.
A rush for women 35 years or older interested in joining Beta Sigma Phi will be held at 7 p.m. on Feb. 27 at Dempster Atrium on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University.
The next meeting of Xi Nu Phi will be Feb. 21 at the home of Sharon Hinkebein.
The Town & Country FCE Club met Feb. 9 at the home of Mary Klaproth with 10 members present. Klaproth, vice president, presided over the meeting. It was reported that the club's booth at the community garage sale at the Osage Community Centre was successful. Plans were made for the Valentine's Day party for the children at Cottonwood Treatment Center. Cupcakes and soda were provided for the party.
The club selected Parkview State School for this year's project. Financial contributions will be made to help purchase playground equipment.
Members were asked to bring supplies for the food pantry to the March meeting. The quarterly council meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. on March 2 at the University of Missouri Extension Center in Jackson.
Leader training will be held at 6:30 p.m. on March 20. Members signed up to attend the various lessons. All Clubs Day will be March 27 at the Extension Center.
Judy Johnson gave a program on bird watching, and Shirley Heise gave a program on jewelry making.
Club Out will be at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 23 at Shogun restaurant in Cape Girardeau. The next meeting will be March 9 at the home of Doris Wilkinson.
The United Methodist Women of New Salem United Methodist Church in Daisy and Old Salem Church in Millersville met at the home of Barbara Brown on Feb. 1. Dorothy Hahs, president, presided over the meeting. Correspondence and thank-you notes were read from Juanita Russell and family, Tilda Hobeck family, Betty Henry and Addie Henley, and Della Seabaugh.
The Vigortone Dinner will be held Feb. 23 and was discussed. Jackie Kurre is still checking on the sound system for the fellowship hall. The spring district meeting will be held March 25 at Perryville, Mo., but no further details are available. Kurre was appointed to the nominating commimttee for the year 2009.
Colleen Lukefahr reported that the young adults had put up the Christmas display in Jackson City Park and would be responsible for it this year. Showers for church members and relatives were discussed. UMW women will be glad to attend showers if invited, but the UMW will no longer hold them.
The date book's monthly activities were dicussed month by month.
The program was presented by Brown, followed by signing and addressing Valentines to be mailed to shut-ins and the elderly.
The next meeting will be March 8 at the home of Shirley Grebe.
