Lamplighters FCE began the new club year by holding its monthly meeting Jan. 19 at the home of Karen Eaker. Jackie Kurre, president, called the meeting to order and had members say the Pledge of Allegiance and to repeat the membership pledge. The Club Collect was sung. The hostess gave devotional readings titled "His Mysterious Ways" and "Outsmarting." Four charter members and eight other members answered roll call by sharing the earliest recollection of the Lamplighters Club.
During the business session, the minutes were read and approved, and the treasurer's report was given and placed on file. Yearly committees were appointed and approved. It was decided that Dorothy Hahs would be responsible for purchasing, with club funds, three dolls for Child Advocacy Day. Terry and Bev Meyer removed the Christmas display in Cape County Park. Verla Mangels read the proposed revisions of the bylaws. Approval of these revisions will be made at the February meeting.
A secret ballot vote was taken to determine if the club would continue to participate with a SEMO District Fair booth display and the Christmas display in the Cape County Park. The majority of members present voted not to continue these activities.
Members reviewed the monthly planned activities for the year and voted to fund the proposed monthly projects.
It was decided to donate $100 to the Scope Club to help fund the Sophomore Pilgrimage.
A motion was made to submit the name of Jo Ann Hahs for the Heart of FCE Award.
Mangels shared the preliminary plans for the 2012 tours sponsored by the County FCE.
Members were reminded that Feb. 1 will be a work day for weighted items for the autism center.
Information was given on the 10-week walking program, "Striking a Balance," sponsored by the Southeast Missouri Area Agency on Aging.
The next meeting will be held in the home of Kurre. Each member should bring a favorite bread recipe and/or sample. Linda Sebaugh will have the program on bread making.
The Southeast B&G Chapter of the Missouri Alumni Association was held Feb. 6 at the MU Extension Center in Jackson. Present were three board members, Tom Frasher, Roger Guyot and Larry Simon, and one guest, Richard Proffer.
Guyot gave the treasurer's report. The regular account is unchanged; $100 was added to the scholarship account.
The Founder's Day event was discussed. It will be held Feb. 9 at Dexter Bar-B-Que in Cape Girardeau. Frasher bought seven items from the MU bookstore with chapter funds for the silent auction. To date there are 24 items for the auction. About 30 people are expected to attend the event. Frasher will read a letter at the event that he received from Kurt Heischmidt, last year's $4,000 scholarship winner.
The student picnic was briefly discussed. It is scheduled for June 14 at Cape County Park North shelter 4. Stephanie Heffernan will be asked to send an email notice to all eligible students concerning the event. Postcard notices will also be sent to the families of the students at the proper time.
It was decided that the chapter will sponsor an MAA membership for Proffer. Proffer attends most of the chapter meetings and has been generous with both his time and talents in support of the chapter, as well as making the Extension Center facilities available for meetings and events. Proffer filled out the application and the application and payment will be turned over to Heffernan at the Founder's Day event.
Frasher has added Kyle Thompson as a new board member on the chapter roster.
Heffernan will be asked to send notices to all student members regarding the $1,000 chapter scholarship. The deadline for submitting an application is April 1.
Proffer reminded members that the MAA Legislative Day at the State Capital is April 3.
The need to find a member to serve as our new president-elect effective July 1 was discussed.
The next meeting will be at 6 p.m. March 5 at the MU Extension Center in Jackson.
