New McKendree UMW

The New McKendree United Methodist Women met April 9 with 25 members present. The meeting was called to order by Mary Klaproth, president, after which the unit recited the UMW purpose. Minutes of the previous meeting were read by Pam Buck, secretary and were approved. Marilyn Fronabarger, treasurer, gave the treasurer's report. Klaproth reminded the unit that money was in the 2013 budget for the youth group and a check should be sent to the church for the Youth Work Camp to Mobile Alabama.

The following committee reports were given:

Edith Eggers, program resources, set up two tables of books from the church library. All were available to be taken for free. Elwanda Corbin suggested the remaining books be taken to the district meeting. Klaproth read an article in the Mission Voice Conference Paper that mentioned Patsy Johnson who reads 20 books every year from the UMW Reading Program list.

Doris Dace has agreed to serve as spiritual growth chairperson for the remainder of the year and gave the morning devotion.

Social action: Members were reminded that the April emphasis is the Jackson School District and the May emphasis would be the Food Pantry.

Education and interpretation: The new deadline for registration for Mission U is June 15.

Membership, nurture and outreach: Inez Statler will be visiting Chateau Girardeau in April.

Supportive community: Elwanda Corbin reported a bereavement meal would be served.

The Wesleyan Circle won the mission ribbon for the highest percentage in attendance.

The Esther Circle will host the Jackson Manor birthday party in May.

UMW Weekend is April 27 and 28. Members were reminded of the candle burning and to wear their UMW pins that weekend.

Julie Combs spoke about the 100-mile yard sale and asked for any racks, plastic shelving, skirt hangars, jewelry boxes and plastic bags to be brought to the church for use that weekend. Furniture and large items will be picked up.

The next UMW meeting will be at 9:30 a.m. May 7. The Esther Circle will provide the program and the Wesleyan Circle will furnish refreshments.

Bernice Chastain from the Wesleyan Circle presented the program.

American Legion Auxiliary 63

Chaplain Catherine Allison opened the meeting with a prayer. Shirley Holloway, director of the Amen Center, a homeless shelter in Delta, was the guest speaker. The center operates on donations and contributions and has no government affiliation.

Hostesses for the luncheon were Fern Schlimme, Vergie Templeton and Barbara Yallaly.

Yallaly, president, opened the business meeting with announcing the 50/50 drawing was awarded to Dorothy Klein and the attendance prize to Reba Strayhorn.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read with a correction to be made. The treasurer gave her report and it was accepted as read.

Linda Kern reminded us of the Poppy Days to be held May 18 and 19. Additional volunteers are needed to fill all of the time slots.

The auxiliary currently has 130 members paid to date. The goal is 166.

Jane Grojean, Girls State co-chairman, announced girls, three from Cape Girardeau Central High School and three from Notre Dame Regional High School, will be attending Girls State this spring. Those attending are Sydney Irene Messerle, Morgan Schmittzehe, Jessica Westrich, Bailey Kraleman, Bailey Bliss and AbbyGail Boyer.

During 2012 the auxiliary donated 4,187 hours at the Missouri Veterans Home and $14,919 for veterans activities and programs.

Members voted to donate $100 to the Childrens Miracle Network and $200 toward the purchase of a district flag.

The next meeting will be held on May 8 for lunch, followed by the business meeting at 1 p.m.

Town and Country FCE Club

The Town and Country FCE Club met on April 11 with Joyce King as hostess. Karen Murphy and Donna Woolsey were welcomed as guests. Sue Jones, president, opened the meeting. King gave the devotion, "Calvary." Mary Klaproth led a game, filling in the blanks with items of food. Roll call was naming a favorite vegetable from the garden.

Coins for Friendship were collected. A thank-you note was read from Cottonwood Residential Treatment Center for the Easter treat sacks. Members are invited to The Lutheran Home volunteer luncheon on Tuesday with several members planning to attend. Members brought bingo prizes for The Lutheran Home to be delivered on April 30.

Members brought Books for Newborns to be delivered by Lois Seabaugh to SoutheastHEALTH for National Day of the Family which is May 15.

Klaproth gave a report on the Autism Weighted Blanket Workshop. Twenty-six blankets and six lap pads were made on April 9 and delivered on April 10 to TouchPoint Autism Center. Klaproth gave a brief report on Child Advocacy Day which was held on April 2 in Jefferson City, Mo.

At the recent All Club's Day Darlene McCain, Seabaugh, Jones and Klaproth received years of membership pins and certificates.

The Spring District meeting will be held on May 14 at the Patterson Community Building in Patterson, Mo. Registration begins at 9 a.m. All members attending are asked to bring a silent auction item. Several members plan to attend the meeting.

Seabaugh presented a program on, "raising your own food." All members assisted in the Hearth Fire Series #4, Someone's in the "Supermarket...Buying Safe Food."

Club out will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Branding Iron Restaurant in Jackson.

Refreshments were served by the hostess. The next meeting will be on May 9 with Seabaugh as the hostess. King will present the program on the "new health plan."
