The Amerian Legion Auxiliary met Wednesday for their monthly meeting and luncheon. Hostesses were Pat Gross, Charlene Vandeven and Arlinda McElreath.
Catherine Allison introduced Dr. Frank Nickell, guest speaker. Dr. Nickell gave a very interesting and informative program regarding the churches of our area.
Following the program, Patsy Kimbrel, president, called the meeting to order. The minutes and treasurers reports were given by Barbara Yallaly and Myrna Powers.
An informative program was held on May 2 in Sikeston, Mo., for the briefing for the girls attending Girls State. The girls attending are Sydney Ozburn and Hillary Caldwell, sponsored by the Lions Club; Chelsea Pannier, sponsored by the Downtown Optimist Club; Courtney Schneider, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus Council 11205; Kikki Popp, sponsored by American Legion Auxiliary #63; and Christina Cruse, sponsored by the Elks Club. Girls State will be held June 20 through 26.
Poppy Day will be held Friday with Legionnaires and auxiliary members offered the poppies and accepted donations for veterans.
Linda Kern reported we have achieved 95 percent of our membership goal. Dorothy Klein reported sending sympathy cards to Alice Cordia and Jackie Lowes.
The auxiliary made quilts and will be given to a homeless shelter. Members will meet May 24 to complete the last quilt for the summer.
Myrna Powers updated our Constitution and By Laws. Juanita Cook seconded the motion made by Gerri Stone to send the revisions to department headquarters in Jefferson City, Mo., for approval,
Members were asked to bring an item to be sent to our troops in Afghanistan
Our June meeting will be held at the conservation shelter in Arena Park. After a noon lunch the afternoon will be spent playing bingo.
The May 6 meeting of the Tilsit 4H Club was called to order by Ryan Aufdenberg, president, at Immaculate Conception Parish Center. Pledges were lead by Dylan Muench and Steven Peters. Roll call was "Who is your favorite teacher?"
There were 16 members present. This was a backwards meeting night. There were many project reports.
Renee Peters gave a demonstration on "five uses of a writing tip -- cake decorating." Dylan Muench gave a demonstration on "how to plant a tomato."
May Friendship Day was celebrated May 7 at First Presbyterian Church in Jackson. The Rev. Grant Gillard opened the evening with prayer before the covered dish dinner. Following the meal, Shirley Patterson, co-leader, welcomed all, and urged everyone to consider nominations for the Human Rights Award. Joyce King, co-leader, then talked about the upcoming CROP Sale and Luncheon in July, and the Ecumenical Registry, which is seeking one million signatures by December 2011.
"Living the Vision" was the theme for the program, which was to encourage us to look at how we are living the vision presented by our founding mothers, and where we must incorporate building blocks of prayer, planning, and people to help us achieve this goal. Jonelle McNeely was program Leader, with Susan Venable as pianist and Shirley Patterson as song leader. Other participants in the program were Mary Morton, least coin leader; Debra Tracy, meditation; Louise Duncan, Dorothy Sheard, Yzonne Johnson, and Shirley Hutton, Nehemiah skit; Deena Ring, poem, "A Cathedral"; and Chris Pagano, benediction. The New Bethel Church choir members celebrated with special music while the offering was conducted.
After the program Roberta Brown, scholarship committee member, introduced Haley Lewis who is enrolled in the LPN Program at the Cape Girardeau Career and Technology Center. Lewis is the recipient of a scholarship presented to her by the local Church Women United.
The next Bible Study and Board meeting will be held June 4 at the Chateau Girardeau.
