The Cape County Democrat Ladies Club met Dec. 9 at Gordonville Grill in Gordonville for their Christmas party and business meeting. They brought 35 gifts of clothing to donate to the Safe House for Women instead of exchanging presents among one another.
Linda Sanders, president, reminded us of the needs for the chili fund raiser to be held March 5. Also the group ordered patriotic name badges. Information about the group may be had by calling Sanders at 243-5128.
The next meeting will be held at 4 p.m. on Feb. 10, at Denny's Restaurant on West Street in Cape Girardeau.
The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 63 met Dec. 8 for the annual Christmas meeting and party.
Betty Gilmore, president of District 14th, was our special guest. There were 32 members and guests in attendance for the pizza lunch and brief meeting. All members brought cookies, candy and sweet treats for dessert.
Members voted to give a monetary donation to the Boys and Girls Club in lieu of a previously announced party. Food and paper products were brought by the members for the Red Star Food Pantry.
Jane Grojean won the attendance prize and Catherine Allison won the 50/50 drawing.
The next meeting will be Jan. 12 with a luncheon served at noon, followed by the 1 p.m. meeting.
Jane Clark was hostess when the Kage FCE met Dec. 9 at the Dalhousie Clubhouse for their annual Christmas luncheon. Dortha Strack, president, presided over the meeting. There were 18 members present along with two guests, Marie James and Pam Morgan.
Judie Herbst and Shirley Palen presented framed certificates of appreciation for years of service to Verna Vogel, 46 years; and Edna Hey and Margaret Crites, 22 years. They are "retiring" from the club.
It was decided to go Christmas caroling on Monday at Fountainbleau Lodge, The Lutheran Home and Landmark Hospital.
A contribution will be sent to the Tree of Lights, Christmas for the Elderly and Toybox for the December service project.
The service project for January will benefit Mid-America Teen Challenge. Chapsticks, hand cream, gloves, and money to purchase items will be collected at the January meeting. Barbara Schaffner will deliver the items to Teen Challenge.
Yearbooks for the new year were distributed. Bingo was played following the meeting.
The next meeting will be held on Jan. 13 at the Cape Girardeau Senior Center, and will be hosted by Sharon Aldredge. The program will be presented by Jo Daume.
The Cape Girardeau Area Church Women United met on Dec. 3 at the Cape Area Family Resource Center. Co-leader Joyce King began with a reading on the meaning of Christmas, and Jonelle McNeely reading Luke 2:1-20 from the Holy Bible. Christmas carols were led by co-leader, Shirley Patterson, accompanied by Helen Ueleke.
The business part of the morning included Kay Lee, a new member, taking over the Fellowship of the Least Coin from Meta Siemers, who held that position for many years. King showed the new logo for the Festival of Sharing. Everyone was invited to sign the Ecumenical Registry if they have not already done so. Next year will be the 70th anniversary of Church Women United.
Barbara Barks was hostess to the Oak Ridge Homemakers FCE group on Dec. 15 for their regular meeting.
Twelve members answered the roll call by giving an idea for an unusual Christmas gift. Betty Dellinger gave the devotion by telling the "Legend of the Candy Can," and Barks read a "Christmas Poem".
Marilyn Retherford reported the club sent 270 Christmas Cards to the soldiers serving our country at a cost of over $50.
Jean Rehak, president, praised members for a successful hosting of the Cape Girardeau County FCE members for the County Council Meeting on Dec. 2, Thank you cards were read from ladies of other clubs.
The Leader Training meeting will be held in Jackson in March and will be discussed on at the February meeting.
The program committee will meet in January and will work out the 2011 programs for the club.
By general consent members decided the club needs a new Christmas display for use in the Jackson City Park. The idea was tabled for the present.
Retherford announced that the club would not be doing the Tai Chi lessons as planned for lack of a trained leader to teach. She did use a DVD to show examples of Tai Chi.
Bingo with the veterans was announced and Coins for Friendship were collected.
All wanting secret pals for the new year drew names. 2010 secret pals were revealed by getting Christmas gifts that were distributed.
The next meeting will be Jan. 11, in the home of Carole Jo Byrd.
