New McKendree UMW
The United Methodist Women of New McKendree United Methodist Church in Jackson met in the fellowship hall on Dec. 6 with Marilyn Fronabarger presiding. The Mary and Martha Circle was in charge of the program and Mary Klaproth, a member of the circle, read a short Christmas story. The UMW voted to give $150 to the John 3:16 ministry.
Tandy Wendel gave additional dates to be included in the program books for 2006.
Circle roll call was taken with the Mary and Martha Circle having the most members in attendance with nine members.
Various chairpeople gave reports including Pat Lynn, social action chairwoman, stating the mittens brought would be put on the mitten tree and the toys would be given to needy children.
Shirley Patterson, chairwoman of education and interpretation, announced Legislative Day will be held in Jefferson City, Mo., March 6 and 7. She announced the assembly of the United Methodist Women will be held in Anaheim, Calif., May 4 through 7, and that she is planning to attend.
Doris Davault of the Wesleyan Circle thanked the many UMW members for donating food and helping with the bereavement meal for Charles Propst. Wilma Wilcoxson thanked members for donating food and helping with the bereavement meal for the Doyle Varnum family. It was announced that approximately $500 was raised with the recent chili dinner.
Amy Cook volunteered to take care of the Best Choice labels.
Klaproth was presented with a special recognition mission pin for her service to the Mary and Martha Circle and the UMW.
The following upcoming events were announced: Mission Team meets in the fellowship hall at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 3; Church Women United Hospitality Day at Maple United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau at 2 p.m. Jan. 22; and United Methodist Women meeting which will include a stone soup luncheon at 10 a.m. Feb. 7.
The Tilsit 4-H Club members held a Christmas dinner for their parents, families and leaders on Dec. 2 at the University of Missouri Extension office. After the dinner, a meeting was held. Matthew Golden, president, presided over the meeting. There were 22 members and 45 others present. David Gholson and Clay Birk led the pledges. Gholson explained what the 4-H pledge stands for. The secretary's and treasurer's reports were given.
The club is selling 4-H t-shirts. A work day is planned for Jan. 14 and 16 to construct weighted blankets, vests, and lap pads for autistic children for the club's service project. Members were encouraged to buy a Christmas gift for a needy family that the club has adopted through the Lutheran Family and Childrens Services for a service project. The club will go Christmas caroling on Saturday.
Completion pins were handed out to each member who completed the 4-H year. Renee Peters was accepted as a new member. The crochet project meeting report was given.
The next meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 5 at the Gordonville Fire Station.
The Town & Country FCE Club met on Dec. 8 at Hunan Chinese restaurant in Jackson for its annual Christmas party. Sue Jones and Inez Knott were hostesses for the party.
Shirley Heise, president, conducted a short business meeting with the reading of the minutes, roll call, and the treasurer's report. Mary Klaproth reported the hosting of the Cape County Extension Council Christmas meeting went well.
New club officers for 2006 were installed by Heise.
Members exchanged secret pal Christmas gifts and new secret pal names for 2006 were drawn. Each member also brought a toy for Toybox. Members signed a Christmas card to be sent to Norma Schreiber.
The next meeting will be on Jan. 12 and will be a pound auction and the club's annual birthday party. The meeting place will be announced at a later date. Doris Wilkinson, Johnson and Klaproth are in charge of arrangements.
Xi Nu Phi of Beta Sigma Phi met Dec. 6 at Scraps 'N' More in Cape Girardeau. Dwana Leible taught members how to make paper clutch photo albums.
Cathy Pancoast gathered items for the chapter's service project, Global Care Packages.
Plans for the upcoming Founder's Day were discussed.
The club will meet at the home of Debbie Balsamo for a Christmas party and gift exchange.
The Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158 met Nov. 8 with Larry Koehler, commander, presiding.
A motion was made for a second vote for $1,500 to go to the Missouri Veterans Home for Christmas gifts for the residents. The motion was seconded and passed. Barbara Yallaly, veterans home representative, received the check.
Norm Rechenberg and Norman Lowes were introduced as new members.
John Hopkins introduced Don and Jean Adams. Jean Adams gave a program on the Merchant Marines and a bill that is currently before Congress to provide compensation and recognition to this group of veterans.
The minutes from the last meeting were approved as written. Koehler gave the financial report. P.M. Kurre reported membership at 626 with 76 percent paid for 2006.
At the last meeting, Bill Poe had reported that the post was running out of hospital equipment. People responded with several items including a expensive bed. He also reported that special events are being considered for the 100th Homecomers celebration, coming up in a few years.
Mike Strack passed out a proposal to be presented to the city to have the cemeteries in the city mark the streets and walkways making graves easier to locate. He said he needed 25 signatures on the request. He also reported providing a new flag, staff and base to the Jackson Senior Citizen Center.
David Ludwig reported one student had applied to participate in the oratorical contest. Koehler gave the house report, Jack Latimer gave the club report, and Leonard Adams gave the dance report.
Koehler presented Ludwig a citation for the post from the national headquarters for the Americanism program.
