New McKendree UMW

The New McKendree United Methodist Women met Dec. 1 in the church fellowship hall with 21 members present. The meeting was called to order by Mary Klaproth, president, followed by the unit reciting the UMW Purpose.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read by substitute secretary Janice Burk and approved as read. Marilyn Fronabarger, treasurer, gave the monthly report. She also asked for approval for the UMW Christmas donation toward apportionments. Julie Combs made a motion the amount be increased. Linda Thompson seconded the motion. Motion passed. Klaproth announced that Church Women United dues of $5 are being collected from those who would like to belong to that group.

Chairperson reports:

Spiritual growth: Julie Combs shared a devotion for Advent.

Social action: Donna Mason reported that circles had made donations for the Christmas for the Needy and that donations could be made by members to the food pantry in December.

Mission ribbons: Elwanda Corbin shared a new Mission Ribbon.

Bereavement: Donna Mason reported no bereavement meals in the past month.

The Mary and Martha Circle won tonight's attendance ribbon.

Klaproth made cake assignments to circles for the Jan. 16 fish fry. Jackson Manor birthday parties will be hosted by Wesleyan Circle on Dec. 14 and Mary and Martha Circle on Jan. 11.

A work day at the SEMO Food Bank in Sikeston, Missouri, is scheduled for Jan. 25, leaving the church at 8:15 a.m. Deadline for registration for the March 8 and 9 Legislative Event is Jan. 31.

There was discussion on the need to locate keys to unlock the UMW display cabinet as well as a UMW file cabinet. Sue Jones made the motion that if the keys cannot be found a locksmith should be contacted. Elwanda Corbin seconded. Motion passed.

The group was reminded to turn in canceled stamps for the stamp ministry.

An installation of officers for 2016 was conducted by Sherry Hammes and Betty Henry. The 2016 program books are now available.

Patsy Johnson presented a program on Susannah Wesley.

The Mission Team will meet at 1 p.m. on Jan. 5. The stone soup luncheon will be at 10 a.m. on Feb. 9.

Klaproth closed the meeting with a reading from the Prayer Calendar. Refreshments were served by the Mary and Martha Circle.
