Beta Sigma Phi Missouri Torchbearer IOTA Chapter

The Torchbearer Iota Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met at the home of Vicki McKinney with 11 members present. President Linda Belote presided.

Dixie Jones presented information on the International Beta Sigma Phi Convention, a four-day event to be held in Kansas City, Missouri, in August 2016.

Bobbie Woodard reminded members of the lunch trip to the Blue Boar in Illinois. This will include members and guests. A Christmas party is being planned for Dec. 6 at the Cape Girardeau Country Club. Dec. 8 is the annual Christmas dinner at the home of Judie Herbst. The social committee also has a "Mary Poppins" movie night set for January at the home of Bernie Gardner.

Carole Calvin read "Making a Motion" from the Book of Beta Sigma Phi.

The program for the evening was presented by McKinney. McKinney introduced her sister, Jill Halbert, a former Beta Sigma Phi member. They presented the program on entrepreneurship of local women. Belote read a poem titled "My Pop" written by Shelly, daughter of McKinney, in memory of her grandfather.

American Legion Auxiliary

The American legion Auxiliary met Nov. 12 following lunch at the Cape Girardeau Parks & Recreation spaghetti dinner. Minutes of the October meeting were read by Catherine Allison. The financial report was filed for audit. Newly elected Department of Missouri Commander Dennis Woeltje thanked the auxiliary for their support. He spoke of the legion family, the American Legion Auxiliary, Sons of the American Legion and the Legion Riders.

Linda Kern thanked members for the gifts she took to Jefferson School for their Christmas Gift Shop. She also announced that the Christmas party Sponsored by SALT will be held Dec. 4 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Eagles, with light refreshments served.

Membership Chairman Linda Kern announced 52 more members are needed to achieve our goal. National and Department of Missouri will waive fees and ask members to sign women veterans for this year only, with the hope they will remain as members in the future. The unit agreed to this proposal.

Poppies will be ordered in May, on a motion by Myrna Powers and seconded by Allison.

President Barbara Yallaly thanked the members for their support in helping make the ham and bean dinner a huge success. Plans to stuff stockings for the troops have been put on hold. We are awaiting word from the American Red Cross about sending Christmas Cards to the troops.

The auxiliary is interested in sending care packages in the months ahead. Members should get this information from their churches.

The December post dinner is Dec. 17 and will be prepared by Patsy Kimbrel and crew. This is a covered-dish meal and Santa will be our special guest.

The next meeting will be Dec. 10. Pizza will be served and Alice Cordia will prepare the salad. All are to bring something edible for the bingo following the meal and sweet treats for dessert.

Nancy Hunter Chapter NSDAR

The Nancy Hunter Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution met on Nov. 19 at the Cape Girardeau Public Library. Charlotte Slinkard, regent, opened the meeting.

The NSDAR president general's November message to the chapters was read by vice-regent Carolyn Webb. Sue LeBruyere, secretary, read the minutes of the October meeting. Ruth Lang, treasurer, gave the financial report and noted that dues have been sent to the national and state societies.

Registrar Catherine Allison reported that four applications are being processed in Washington, D.C. Librarian LaFern Stiver announced that the book "Jamestown People Through 1800" by Martha McCartney was donated to the library in memory of member Martha Jane Beggs Adams.

Committee reports were given by DAR Good Citizen Chairman Carolyn Webb and LeBruyere of the DAR Schools Committee. June Readnour was welcomed as a new member and Jan McClanahan as a guest.

Joe Sullivan, former editor of the Southeast Missourian, presented the program. He recalled how nearly 50 years in the newspaper business took him full circle from his Missouri roots to assignments in various places including New York.

The next meeting will be Dec. 17 at the Missouri Veterans Home.
