Excelsior Optimist Club

The Excelsior Optimist Club met at Drury Lodge on Nov. 12. Lori Siebert, president, called the meeting to order.

Following lunch, a program was presented by Morley Swingle, speaking on his novel, "The Gold of Cape Girardeau."

The business meeting for the Excelsior Optimist Club will be held today.

Kage FCE Club

Kage FCE Club met Nov. 13, at the Cape Girardeau Senior Center with Neva Jackson as hostess. Inez Statler, vice president, conducted the meeting.

Martha Slaten, Opal Collins and Statler attended the leader training session in Altenburg, Mo., on Nov. 7. It was reported that 475 Christmas greetings have been prepared for mailing to the military by Edna Hey. Statler reported taking 30 Little Golden Books to the Cape Girar-deau County Health Department. The chicken and dumpling dinner was held on Oct. 27, with 24 people in attendance.

The club's Christmas display will be put up at Cape County Park on Nov. 25. Jobyna Daume and Linda Farrow will have two dolls made for Child Advocacy by the time of the County FCE meeting on Dec. 4. Judie Herbst will instruct members on making Modge-Podge plates at the Extension Center on Thursday. Those present indicated preferences for committees for 2004. All members are encouraged to attend the Council meeting on Dec. 4, at the Extension Center. The club's Christmas luncheon will be held at the home of Farrow on Dec. 11.

Contributions were received to help with lights and banners for participation of the Mississippi Valley Horsemanship Program in the Cape and Jackson parades.

Herbst presented the program, "Don't Do It -- Delegate."

Roberts Homemakers' Club

At the November meeting of the Roberts Homemakers' Club, plans were made to provide assistance to a family in the Jackson School District during the Christmas season. It was also voted to give a monetary gift to help pay postage on gifts to the service men and women overseas.

It was unanimously agreed to retain the same officers for the coming year: Judy Bryant and Gloria Hanners, co-presidents; Pat Terry, vice president; Janice Hoffmeister, treasurer; Flossie Dow, secretary; Jean McDowell, historian; Alice Eisenhower, game leader; and Kay Millham, reporter.

Scottish Rite Men's Club

The Scottish Rite Men's Club met Nov. 12, with their ladies serving a potluck dinner with meat and drinks provided by the club.

Harold Coarse, president, opened the meeting. Anniversaries and birthdays were recognized. James Foster will be 90 years old on Nov. 20. He is remembered by all as being the manager of Esquire Theater for many years.

Stanley Johnson of the Missouri Department of Transportation spoke on the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge, which is scheduled for a grand opening on Dec. 13.

New officers were voted on: Stanley Beggs, president; John Frey, second vice president; Johnny Slinkard, third vice president; Earl Statler, chaplain; Laymond Allgood, secretary; and Richard Allgood, treasurer.

The next meeting will be the Christmas dinner at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 10 in the lower level of the Masonic Lodge.

VFW Ladies Auxiliary

The VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 3838 met Nov. 13, at the post with Debbie Griffin presiding.

Committee reports were read. Ladies were reminded to bring dessert for the chili day to be held at the post Nov. 22. Also, crafts are needed for the Country Store. Volunteers are needed for bingo at the Veterans Home on Nov. 22. Dues for 2003-2004 may be mailed to Glennetta Vogelsang. Donations were made for veterans' Christmas cards.

The Dec. 11, meeting will be the ladies Christmas party. All are asked to bring a covered dish, a dessert, and a gift for the gift exchange. Members are asked to save Campbell's soup labels. They may be left at the post.

There were eight entries for the Voice of Democracy contest. First place went to Sonya Tikoo; second place, Nathaniel Kinsey; and third place, Rachel Burnett. Patriot Pen entries were: first place, Brittany Burnett and second place, Laoren Kalb. These students will be honored at the District Meeting to be held Jan. 25 at the post.

The next meeting of the Ladies Auxiliary will be at 6 p.m. on Dec. 11 at Post 3838.
