The Southeast Black & Gold Chapter of MAA board members met Nov. 1 at the University of Missouri Extension Center in Jackson. There were four board members, Tom Frasher, Jill Kohut, Jamie Phenix, and Larry Simon, and two guests, Richard Proffer and Zac Williams, present.
Kohut gave the treasurer's report. We still await reimbursement from our 2009 allotment, via the MAA, for the cost of the food for our Student Picnic last June.
Frasher explained the Columns requirements to Williams. The amount of our Chapter allotment and scholarship is based on achieving either Columns or Capstone status. Capstone is the highest status and it permits us to award a $4,000 scholarship, as opposed to a $1,000 scholarship for Columns status. We have achieved Capstone the last four years.
Phenix reported that she donated blood during the Homecoming Blood Drive. We are not aware if other Chapter members donated.
We discussed our high school recruiting trips. Frasher spoke to 21 students at Perryville on Oct. 13. Phenix spoke to 13 students at Oran on Oct. 26 and six students at Chaffee on Oct. 27. Simon reported that he visited Sikeston on Tuesday and Mary Talbut will visit Cape Central and Jackson sometime in November.
We discussed the watch party we had at Buffalo Wild Wings for the Nebraska game. We decided that the next watch party will be for the Kansas game on Nov. 27. The watch party will be held at Beef O'Bradys in Cape Girardeau. Simon will make the reservation for the party.
We discussed our Mizzou Chapter facebook page. We are all encouraged to post information to the page.
Phenix will request Stephanie Heffernan of the MAA to advertise our page via an e-mail message to Chapter members.
We talked about our planned Salvation Army bell ringing activity. Simon reported that there are nine people currently signed up to ring. He will start recruiting in earnest later this week for the 11 remaining shifts. We will again ring in front of the Cape K-Mart store during the first two weeks of December.
Frasher led a discussion concerning our planned Diversity project. We will apply for a Diversity Grant from the MAA in January or February and hold the event sometime in the spring. We will have to set an event date when we apply for the grant. We are again planning on treating a "diverse group" to a movie at Cape West 14 Cine. Simon had suggested the youth at Family Resource Center (about 25). Richard Proffer suggested the Big Sisters/Big Brothers. We might also consider 4-H youth.
We talked about our planned Founder's Day event. The event will be held on Feb. 24, 2011 at Dexter Bar-B-Que in Cape Girardeau. Simon reserved the large room from 5 p.m. He will check with the restaurant to see if we can serve wine during the event. We will again have a silent auction. He will bring a list of last year's auction items to the next meeting. We discussed the possibility of opening up some type of online auction for some of the special auction items, such as an autographed basketball and football. Phenix will contact a member of the Oliver family to request that an Oliver be our guest speaker at the event.
Frasher led a discussion concerning a planned networking event for both unemployed and underemployed college graduates in our Chapter area. After much discussion, we agreed to the following:
Per the suggestion of Williams, we will hold a daytime resume workshop, and at a later date a networking event, possibly with potential employers.
The events will be held at the MU Extension Center in Jackson.
Proffer will contact the State Career Center to arrange for them to conduct the workshop. Preferred dates for this event are Jan. 11, 12 and 19.
The networking event with potential employers will be held in February. Preferred dates for this event are Feb. 8, 15 and 17. We need more planning and discussion on arranging for potential employers to be at this event.
The next meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Dec. 6 at the MU Extension Center in Jackson.
The New McKendree United Methodist Women met on Nov. 2 in the church fellowship hall. Gladys Nitsch, vice president, led the members in reciting the UMW Purpose.
Minutes of the October meeting were read by Gale King, secretary. The minutes were approved as read. All members were given a copy of the treasurer's report.
Edith Eggers, secretary of program resources, reported that she had bought four books and ordered two more. She also announced that all need to report to her the books that they have read. This report is needed for the annual report.
Penny Green announced that this year emphasis on Christmas giving will be for families in need.
June Engel, supportive community, reported on the dinner that is scheduled for 6 p.m. Dec. 11, following the choir cantata. The menu will be as follows: turkey and dressing, green beans, slaw, cranberry sauce, glazed carrots, bread, tea or coffee, and cake. Elwanda Corbin moved that the charge for the December dinner be $6 for adults, ages five to ten will be $3 and children four and under will be free. Sue Ann Smith seconded. The motion passed.
