Presbyterian Women
The first quarterly meeting of the Jackson Presbyterian Women's 2008-2009 year was held Sept. 26 at the church.
Copies of the minutes from the August coordinating team meeting and the last quarterly meeting held in May, along with copies of the treasurer's report were distributed.
Carolyn Thompson made a motion to donate $50 from the mission budget to the Safe House for Women in Cape Girardeau and the amount remaining to the Farmington Children's Home. It was seconded by Fran Reid and passed unanimously.
The program was presented by Lisa Quick, development director for the Safe House for Women in Cape Girardeau. She gave details of their operation and outreach services office which has recently opened in the Town Plaza next door to their Thrift Shop. She handed out copies of their "Wish List" -- items needed on an ongoing basis by their facility.
Jonell McNeely, Church Women United representative, reported that five complete layettes were given at the last CWU meeting.
The next regular meeting will be in October and their annual birthday meeting will be in December. More information on these upcoming meetings will be in the church bulletin.
Reid, missions representative, reported that the next all-church collection for Presbyterian Women will be the Thanks offering on Nov. 16.
Judy Litzelfelner, MOPS coordinator, reported that the rumor that the organization was unhappy with our efforts in their behalf was false.
Scholarship application forms were given to each member. The next meeting will be Jan. 16.
American Legion Riders
The American Legion Riders of Post 63 Cape Girardeau have been busy representing veterans at several area events.
The group manned a public relations stand at the SEMO District Fair and rode in Sikeston's Cotton Carnival Parade on Sept. 27 as an escort for the Gold Star Mother, Annabelle Conner, whose son died in Vietnam. Their next scheduled ride is to the Viet Nam Wall in Desoto, Mo., on Oct. 9 through 12.
At their last meeting at Ryan's in Cape Girardeau, the Chapter 63 Riders decided they will gear future activities to sponsor the Legacy Scholarship program that benefits surviving dependents of men and women killed in action after Sept. 11.
The Chapter 63 group also voted to help raise money for Fisher Houses, a program that provides lodging for family members of wounded service men and women who can't afford to stay with the wounded warrior during their surgery and recuperation. Fisher Houses are much like the more familiar Ronald McDonald houses.
The next meeting at Ryan's in Cape Girardeau at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
Nancy Hunter NSDAR
The Nancy Hunter Chapter of NSDAR held there monthly meeting at Cape Girardeau Public Library Sept. 24.
Catherine Allison, secretary, read the minutes and approved and Dorothy Points, treasurer, gave the treasury report. Dues have been collected and donations were made.
Ruth Lang, regent handed out Innisbrock catalogs as a money making project to help defray the needs of the group. They consist of chocolates and good quality gift wrapping paper.
The group donated three books to the Cape Public Library in honor of our deceased members, Mary Francis Hunter Kinder, Barbara Jones Pemberton and Jetoria Sue Ludlow.
We received invitations to donate in the honor/memory of our military veterans for the Lights of Freedom in the name of our chapter.
The next meeting will be a tour of the Rosemary Becket and Harry L. Crisp II Museum at Southeast Missouri University River Campus at 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 22. Fellowship and dessert will be after meeting at Port Cape.
Lamplighters FCE
The Lamplighters September meeting was held at the home of Linda Sebaugh, president.
Karen Eakers gave a report on the SEMO District Fair booth. Linda Freeman distributed recipes from eight international countries. These will be made by the members and served at the "Business after Hours" social time to be held at the Riverside Regional Library on Oct. 14.
Karen McLane reported on the vice president's meeting that she attended. She listed the topics for the fall and spring leader training meetings that will be held Nov. 7th in Perry County and March 30th in Cape Girardeau County.
Members contributed their beauty items that will be distributed to the Cottonwood Center.
Election of new officers was held with the following as 2009 officers: Sebaugh, president; McLane, vice president; Gayla Volz, treasurer; Jackie Kurre, secretary; Bev Meyer, games; Sharon Bogenpohl, song leader; and Eakers, public relations.
Sebaugh gave a program on ADHD. Several members joined in a group discussion about personal experiences with family members, past students, and friends who suffer from Attention Deficient and how they have overcome the obstacles though the years.
The next meeting will be Oct. 16 at the home of Bert Seyer.
St. Mary CCW
The St. Mary Council of Catholic Women held a covered-dish supper on Sept. 18 in the Huels room. Wayne Elfrink with SEMO Alliance for Diability Independence gave the program.
Three bereavement dinners were served since the last meeting.
Kathleen Keesee, famil commission chair, was awarded the Citizens Recognition Award at the Missouri Catholic Council in Jefferson City, Mo.
A bake sale will be held Nov. 22 and 23 in the school cafeteria.
The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. on Oct. 16 in the Huels room. Judy DeClue will be installed as president.
