Kage FCE Club
The Kage FCE Club gathered at the Cape Girardeau Senior Center for their Sept. 21 meeting. Margaret Crites was hostess.
The program was given by Barbara Marshall, based on the book "Outrageous Older Women." Shirley Rhabar reported on the club's booth at the SEMO District Fair, which was put up by Joan Meyer, Marshall and herself.
Leader Training Session is to be held at the Extension Center in Jackson on Nov. 13. Information on a program, "Eat Well, Be Well with Diabetes" and a meeting for grandparents raising grandchildren were announced. The Southeast District FCE meeting at Brazeau will be held on Oct. 24. The MAFCE conference will be held in Columbia on Oct. 19 and 20.
Jobyna Daume and Barbara Schaffner are in the process of planning an event to celebrate National FCE Week, Oct. 9 to 15.
Members are to bring Christmas greetings for the military when the club has its Oct. 12 meeting. Daume will be hostess.
It was voted to award a $100 scholarship to a non-traditional student at Southeast Missouri State University. A check will be sent to the university and the recipient will receive a letter from the club to that effect.
Members signed up to clean eyeglasses each week through Oct. 12 at the Lutheran Home.
Opal Collins also called attention to a tour to Nashville, Tenn., sponsored by the FCE Clubs of the county, having Opryland Hotel as headquarters. This trip is Dec. 15 to 17.
Alpha Mu Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met at the home of Charlotte Bess. The meeting was conducted by president Vicki McKinney.
Thank-you notes for chapter gifts were received from Gwen Nussbaum, Karen Menard, and the Kenneth Alber ALS Society, the Beta Sigma Phi State Service Project.
The chapter was awarded the three-star rating by the International Office for the 2005-2006 Chapter Year.
Plans were discussed for the 2006 Missouri State Beta Sigma Phi Convention to be held in Springfield Friday through Sunday. The theme will be "Get Your Kicks on Route 66." Members planning to attend are Carole Calvin, Judie Herbst, Dixie Jones and Bobbie Woodard.
A chapter trip to Giant City State Park is being planned for Oct. 22.
Prior to the meeting, Bess introduced her guest speaker for the evening, Carol Reimann. She spoke of her many experiences as a first-grade teacher in Cape Girardeau for 33 years. She is also a past Missouri State Teacher of the Year. Currently, she is the instructional specialist in reading at the Southeast Regional Professional Development Center. She is also a STARR Teacher of the state of Missouri.
After enjoying a covered dish supper, St. Mary Council of Catholic Women held their meeting on Sept. 21 in the Monsignor Huels Room.
Helen Sanders, RN, presented the program on pandemic influenza she gave at the spring assembly. Proper hand washing is one of the best defenses against any illness.
Posters are available for the Community Garage Sale. Tables can be rented for $10. Set up time is Oct. 20 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and Oct. 21 at 6:30 a.m. Sale is Oct. 21 from 7 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.
The Rev. Tom Keifer distributed copies of the parish demographics.
The next meeting will be Oct. 19 in the Monsignor Huels Room.
