Good Shepherd Ladies Guild; Church Women United; Capaha Scottish Rite Women

Sedgewickville UMW

The Sedgewickville United Methodist Women met Oct. 12 with Pete Shrum presiding over the meeting. The minutes were read and approved; the treasurer's report was given.

Sedgewickville United Methodist Church homecoming will be Nov. 6, and the UMW will meet on Nov. 9 in the home of Allison Shrum.

Reports were given on the rummage sale that was held Sept. 24. The left-over items have been donated to Pine Hill and the Salvation Army. The group decided to send a $200 donation to the Village Wardrobe, which is a Bootheel clothes closet and food pantry in Hayti, Mo.

A flier was passed out about the church homecoming; it included information on the antique quilt that will be auctioned.

Dona Maes reported on the fall district meeting, which was well represented by Sedgewickville UMW.

Pete Shrum reported on the purchase of additional silverware and a can opener for the fellowship hall. Greeting cards and a reminder were passed out to members to visit their senior pals and take a Thanksgiving basket.

For Mission Moments, Dona Maes read an article, "Our Mission Connection" from Response magazine, and Anna Stroder read "Chick Day."

The program given by Maes was a book report on Catherine Booth, who is the co-founder of the Salvation Army.

Good Shepherd Ladies Guild

The Good Shepherd Lutheran Ladies Guild held its October meeting. Special guests were men and women of the congregation who are military veterans.

The program focused on the veterans home. Jewel Lincecum reviewed its history, stating that more than 800 veterans have resided there since it opened in 1990. She is a seven-year volunteer. Carolyn Fiedler, an activities aide, explained the three levels of care, and praised the work of area volunteers. Marilyn Ritter gave the third part of the program. She served with SPAR (Coast Guard) during World War II and is a volunteer file clerk with the veterans outpatient clinic.

Sarah Guebert, Emalyn Fritzier, Marie Rubel, Lincecum and Ritter prepared and served the meal.

Amber Kuehn, president, announced that representatives from Lutheran Family and Children's Services will present the program at the Nov. 14 meeting. She reminded members to bring diapers and baby wipes for the supplies shower. Hostesses will be Laverne Fiehler, Betty Green and Rubel.

Church Women United

The Church Women United met Oct. 7 for a Bible study and board meeting at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Ruth George lead the Bible study. Carol Simon provided the table decorations and provided refreshments.

Barb Yallaly, vice president, presided over the business meeting. The minutes were read and approved, and the treasurer's report was discussed and filed with the minutes. Correspondence from Cottonwood Treatment Center was read by Joyce King.

The Awareness luncheon, which was held on Sept. 23 at Grace United Methodist Church, was discussed. Six representatives from Cape Girardeau and Jackson churches told the story of their church. The speakers were Louise Duncan, Ellen Shuck, Marilyn Fronabarger, Pat Foster, Helen Ueleke and Meta Siemers.

World Community Day will be at 9 a.m. Nov. 4 at the Salvation Army in Cape Girardeau. The theme will be "A light to the nations."

The state assembly will be held in Jefferson City, Mo., at the Rickman Center on March 13 and 14. The national CWU president will be the speaker at two of the events, and various workshops are planned. The theme of the assembly will be "We are the tapestry."

Adopt Leader notes will be written by Siemers, who will send them to the women who serve on the city councils in Cape Girardeau and Jackson.

Ueleke told of her involvement with PATCH, which is a prison ministry helping women prisoners and their children. She has corresponded with a female prisoner for 20 years. She asked that the group consider helping the program with the gifts that the members give at the December meeting.

Capaha Scottish Rite Women

The October meeting of Capaha Scottish Rite Women's Club was held at Delmonico's restaurant in Jackson. There were 10 members and five visitors. Luella Armstrong, president, presided over the meeting.

During the social hour, "The Price is Right" was played. Mary Mouser and Bob McLemore won the hostess gifts.

The Nov. 14 meeting will be held at Delmonico's with Debbie Hay as hostess and Joyce Peerman as program chairman.
