Lamda Omicron; American Legion Auxiliary; MSSDAR

American Legion Auxiliary 158

The American Legion Auxiliary 158 met Oct. 3 for a late breakfast meeting. Barbara Yallaly and Fern Schlimme of Unit 63 were guests.

A discussion was held on the making of comfort quilts to be given to family members who have lost a loved one in Iraq. Patterns to be used and the size of each quilt were given out.

A $500 check was presented to Yallaly by Nancy Prince to be used to purchase Christmas gifts for residents of the Missouri Veterans Home.

The meeting was called to order by Carolyn Myer, president. Margie Grindstaff, chaplain, said the prayer.

The minutes and treasurer's reports of the September meeting were read and approved. Membership now stands at 166. All members who have not paid dues for 2007 are urged to do so now. To receive all benefits, dues need to be paid by December 2006.

Correspondence was received from the new District 14th president, Louetta Burkett, and the Alzheimer's Association, thanking the group for a memorial donation.

The auxiliary made sandwiches for the Patriot Riders at the funeral of Jeremy Shank of Jackson.

Auxiliary members helped with bingo and served doughnuts at the veterans home in September.

The auxiliary will serve doughnuts at the veterans home on Oct. 28. The next meeting will be at 11:30 a.m. Nov. 8 at the American Legion hall. There will be a meal served before the meeting.

Lamda Omicron

The Lamda Omicron Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met Oct. 3 at the home of Joetta Snell.

The hostess presented a program on taking care of your skin.

Christina Speidel was voted finance chairwoman and Casey Hertenstein was elected as service chair and social chairwoman.

The social calendar was discussed.

The meeting will be today at the home of Rachel Hessenkemper.

American Legion Auxiliary

The Amerigan Legion Auxiliary met Oct. 11 with Patsy Kimbrel and Barbara Yallaly serving as hostesses.

Post member Monty Kyle was introduced following the opening ceremonies. He spoke regarding help from the auxiliary for the post's ham and bean dinner, which will be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 7 at the American Legion Hall.

The minutes and treasurer's report from the September meeting were read and approved. A thank you was expressed to Freeman Lewis, who audited the auxiliary's books.

Vergie Templeton sent out several "thinking of you" and "sympathy" cards.

Correspondence included a thank-you from Catherine Allison for the auxiliary's monetary gift to her family with a sympathy card from friends of the auxiliary. A letter and a DVD was received form the Missouri Coalition for Quality Care in Jefferson City, Mo., asking for long-term care ombusmen volunteers. Peggy Blaylock and her husband, Bill, are currently serving in two nursing homes in Cape Girardeau.

A thank-you card was received from Red Star Baptist Church for donations of food for their food pantry. Members voted to send a donation to the Community Caring Council. A note was received from member Regina Yeager and her husband, Bill, thanking us for our concern and prayers.

Frieda Howard, membership chairwoman, reported she has collected 129 dues, which have been sent to the department. She announced the Tree of Lights tour will be Dec. 14 leaving from the Cape Girardeau Senior Center. Another report will be given at the November meeting.

Myrna Powers, community chairwoman, presented a gift basket at the dedication of the Habitat for Humanity House on Centennial Drive on Sept. 24. She will offer help or donations to the Cape Girardeau Public Library, and it was approved for her to take refreshments to the Alternative School for Make a Difference Day. Dorothy Klein made a motion that we sponsor a girl scout troop as in the past.

A donation will be sent to Betty Gilmore for the John J. Pershing Christmas Gift Shop. A donation was approved to give to Yallaly for the Christmast Gift Shop at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau. Gilmore is department hospital representative for the American Legion Auxiliary. Yallaly is the department's home representative for the veterans home.

On Nov. 11, all veterans' home and VA hospital residents throughout the nation will be given a $1 bill and a note of appreciation.

JoAnn Cronin from Imperial, Mo., the Missouri candidate, was elected and installed as the American Legion Auxiliary National President at the legion's national convention in Salt Lake City.

The 14th District meeting will be held at 2 p.m. Nov. 5 at the Sikeston Legion Post Home. Carpools will leave from the legion hall parking lot.

Iola Amelunke brought quilt blocks she made for the comfort quilt project. To date, the group has made more than 300 blocks, which will be sewn into a quilt to be presented to a family who has had a fatality in the war in Iraq.

MSSDAR

The Missouri State Society Daughters of the American Revolution held its Southeast District Meeting Sept. 8 at The Bluff Inn in Poplar Bluff, Mo., with Chalk Bluff Chapter (Campbell) as host chapter and with Poplar Bluff Chapter as co-host chapter. The National Theme was "The Bell of Freedom ... The Sound of Patriotism." The state theme was "Show Me DAR in Missouri." Presiding was Mary Lou Hill, Southeast District director, from Chalk Bluff Chapter. Honored guests were state regent Mary Lynn Tolle and Jane Evans, honorary state regent, past vice president general and national chairman of development NSDAR. Ten chapters in the district registered a total of 60 members, officers and guests.

Hill called the meeting to order. Freda Jean Wilkerson, Poplar Bluff chaplain, led the invocation. Evans led Pledge of Allegiance. The national anthem was led by Mary Bess Green, Chalk Bluff Chapter.

Tolle addressed the group presenting an overview of the next two year's work. She stressed that her personal project will be the furnishing of the new state archives at Rosalyn Heights, the state headquarters for MSSDAR in Booneville, Mo. The archives is a climate-controlled building that will be the safe depository of MSSDAR records of the 108 chapters of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution in the state of Missouri. Anyone who knows the locations of records from any disbanded chapters should guide those records into this safe archive.

Morgan Lake from John Guild Chapter in Jackson and Dorothy Points from Nancy Hunter Chapter in Cape Girardeau reported chapter activities of the past year.

Missouri Daughters won many honors at the National Continental Congress held at the national headquarters in Washington D.C. from June 28 thorugh July 2.

Nancy Hunter Chapter was a junior membership individual winners in the district.

State officers presented chapter time savers and program ideas via an enjoyable "bear hunt." Informational workshops were presented for attending chapter officers to help them successfully fulfill their office requirements.

Lunch was held from noon to 1 p.m. An informative period of questions and answers followed the activities.
