Nancy Hunter NSDAR
The Nancy Hunter Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution met Sept. 22 at Chateau Girardeau multi-purpose room for a luncheon and business meeting. Sharon Rowland, regent, led the group in the rituals.
A discussion was held about the group spending time helping at the Red House on Main Street in Cape Girardeau, showing visitors through the Interpretive Center for Reproduction of the Louis Lorimier Home and Trading Post.
Dorothy Points gave a report of five members attending the tea the chapter gave for five lady veterans living at the Missouri Veterans Home. She also told about her trip to the Southeast Missouri District meeting in Farmington, Mo.
New officers were announced for the coming year. They are: Rowland, regent; Points, vice-regent; Lois Spalding, chaplain; Catherine Allison, recording and corresponding secretary; Ruth Lane, treasurer; Lett, registrar; Sarah Garner, historian; and Barbara Pemberton, librarian.
American Legion Post 158
The Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158 in Jackson met Sept. 14 with Commander Gary Kamp presiding. Austin Bock and Nick Garvey talked about their experiences at Boys State and thanked the chapter for sponsoring them.
The minutes of the last meeting were approved and Richard Aguilar gave the financial report. P.M. Kurre reported that membership is at 596. Bill Sullivan gave the club report.
Bill Poe reported on Homecomers and that the city was requesting that it be held before school starts. Poe made a motion that it would be held next year. The motion was made to amend the motion that it be held the last week of July. The motion was seconded, a discussion followed and the motion failed. Another motion was made to have it the second week in August. This motion was seconded and passed.
Jim Nelson reported on a contribution made to the American Legion Post 158 Memorial Scholarship fund from Cleo and Helen Van Amberg in memory of Adolph Ludwig.
David Ludwig reported receiving letters thanking the post for sponsoring the boys going to Boys State. The letters also included their accomplishments. Bock was elected or appointed presiding county commissioner, fireman Ward I, and delegate to county committee, Ward I. Garvey was elected or appointed community service coordinator and election judge. Patrick Tankersley was elected or appointed attorney general, senator, assistant city clerk, delegate to state convention, Ward II and attorney.
Virgil Whitener gave the house report. A motion was made and seconded that the post spend up to $10,000 to upgrade the club room. A motion was made to provide $1,500 to the Missouri Veterans Home for Christmas presents. This motion was seconded and passed.
The annual Post veterans service will be held at the 8:30 a.m. service on Nov. 7 at First General Baptist Church.
New Salem UMW
The regular meeting of the New Salem United Methodist Church UMW met at the home of Goldie Hobeck with 11 members present. The meeting was called to order by Jackie Kurre, president.
There were 12 sick calls made during the month. Fourteen buckets and 10 blankets will be sent to Florida for hurricane victims.
A thank-you note was read from the Susanna Wesley Family Center. A date was set to cook apple butter that will be sold at the fall supper. A committee will plan the Thanksgiving meal which will be held at the November meeting.
Members will bring their World Thanks offering boxes to the next meeting. Bibles will be bought in memory of a deceased member and in honor of New Salem's pastor.
Dorothy Hahs had the program, "The real thing."
Cape Girardeau County FCE
Seventeen members representing six FCE clubs in Cape Girardeau County attended the Oct. 5 district meeting in Greenville, Mo. Wayne County held the event at Greenville United Methodist Church.
Marilyn Edwards, district director, presided over the meeting and reviewed state conference issues. Betty Schalk, state president, and Lynn Maples, state treasurer, were introduced and welcomed to the meeting.
A report was made that Bollinger County had participated in recipe testing this year for the magazine, "Today's Farmer." All present were encouraged to submit recipes to the magazine for possible publication.
The morning program was presented by Wayne County members Dorothy Selden, Louise Everhart and Brenda Douglas. The theme of the meeting was "FCE ... Our legacy from the past will always last." The afternoon program was a song fest with Wayne County member Hearthel Mier. Her son, Fred Mier, assisted her on the mandolin.
Twenty-five dolls were entered in a "Oh! You Beautiful Doll" contest. By popular vote the doll entered by Kim Begley of the Oak Ridge FCE Club was chosen as the winner. This doll will now be entered in a contest with other district winners. The winner of that contest will become state winner and will be presented to the Missouri governor. All dolls are then to be given to state legislators in January at Child Advocacy Day in Jefferson City and then the dolls will be given to children in day-care centers.
Arnsberg 4-H
The Arnsberg 4-H Club met Sept. 2, at Friedheim Trinity Lutheran Church hall with Emily Ruch, treasurer, presiding. Kyle Rohde and Jacob Light led in song and Cody Tuschhoff led the pledges.
September birthdays were recognized. Reports were given on sheep and horses. Plans were made for a Halloween party to be held at the November meeting.
Members held election of officers. They are, Ruch, president; Tyler Lappe, vice president; Kaycie Seyer, secretary; Dustin Oehl, treasurer; Shelby Proctor and Cody Hahs, song leaders; Lance Rhode and Light, game leaders; Ethan Seyer, reporter; and Amanda Lappe, historian.
Xi Nu Phi
The Xi Nu Phi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met Oct. 5 at the home of Linda Biri.
A donation will be sent to the American Red Cross for the Hurricane Relief Fund.
Sandy Ross reported that a Phantom Tea will be held Dec. 5 for the Chromosone 18 Registry and Research Society. The chapter will make a donation and challenge the other area chapters to also make a donation.
Members will attend the Trans-Siberian Orchestra Christmas show at the Show Me Center on Nov. 17.
Biri had the program on apples. The next meeting will be on Tuesday at the home of Ross.
Laureate Alpha Rho
The Laureate Alpha Rho Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met Thursday at the home of Dorothy Miles. Several possible service projects were discussed and the service committee will make some contacts and gather information and report on them at the next meeting.
Bonnie Hennessy read the minutes of the last city council meeting, which was held Sept. 27 and attended by Edna Hey and Hennessy.
Rosanna Whitnel gave a report on the last 2005 convention committee meeting, held Sept. 27.
It was announced that the Exemplar Preceptor banquet will be held Nov. 18 at the Cape Girardeau Elks Lodge and will be hosted by Xi Mu Epsilon.
Miles gave a slide and narration program on the mysteries of Easter Island.
The next meeting will be held Oct. 21 at the home of Whitnel. Each member is asked to bring a treat. Christmas letters to the armed services serving abroad ate to be brought to this meeting.
Exchange Club
The Exchange Club of Cape Girardeau met Sept. 7 and 21 at Port Cape in Cape Girardeau.
At the Sept. 7 meeting, Debbie Otto from Southeast Missouri Hospital's Health Point Plaza and Rhett Hendrickson from Saint Francis Medical Center's Health Works were guest speakers.
Larry Simon presented a plaque to Nancy Jernigan of the United Way of Southeast Missouri for her work with the various organizations in the area. She was asking for donations from service clubs. Simon made a motion to donate $100 to the United Way. The motion carried.
The Sept. 21 meeting was held at the home of Vernon Auer for the annual barbecue night. Max Yeager, president of the Lincolnland District, was present.
Club members helped the 4-H Club at the SEMO District Fair on Sept. 15 and 16. The ladies will help with the ham and bean dinner on Nov. 4.
The next meeting will be Tuesday.
Lamplighters FCE
The Lamplighters FCE Club met Sept. 9 at the home of Sharon Bogenpohl.
Members chose a topic to study and report on membership. The FCE leadership training will be held Nov. 6.
A letter of appreciation for the club's support and gifts was read from Lance Cpl. Russ Meyer. He is the son of member, Bev Meyer, and her husband, Terry. Russ is home on leave from Iraq.
Election of officers was held. They are: JoAnn Hahs, president; Bert Seyer, vice president; Jackie Kurre, secretary; Gayla Volz, treasurer; Teresa Hinkebein, reporter; Bev Meyer, historian; Dorothy Hahs, game leader; and Sharon Bogenpohl, song leader.
Programs were given by Karen McLane on medication safety and grandchildren, and Linda Sebaugh sharing how little changes can make a difference in your well-being.
The next meeting will be Oct. 21 at the home of Sebaugh.
