New Salem UMW

The UMW of New Salem United Methodist Church met in the home of Roberta Seabaugh for their January meeting. Jackie Kurre, president, called the meeting to order. Verla Mangles gave the opening prayer.

It was decided the club will buy a Spring and Fall flower arrangement for the church altar. A spring clean-up day will be announced at a later date.

The program, "The Gift of Life," was given by Mangles. Betty Hahs and Seabaugh assisted her.

Thank you notes were written and sent to different missionaries. New program books for the coming year were filled out.

American Legion Auxiliary

The American Legion Auxiliary met Jan. 8, for lunch served by Frieda Howard and Muriel Day. President Iola Amelunke lead the opening ceremony.

Peggy Blaylock was welcomed as a new member and Emalyn Fitzler was introduced as a guest.

Dorothy Klein reported the patriotic fresh floral arrangement the auxiliary sent to Grace United Methodist Church was very nice. Betty Cato and Klein took the arrangement to the Missouri Veterans' Home and presented the five women residents with individual bouquets.

Education chairman Betty Ritter will deliver scholarship applications to the counselors at Notre Dame and Cape Central High Schools, and to the Career and Technology Center.

Members were reminded to save top tabs for Ronald McDonald. Donations were allowed for Children's Miracle Network, Kenny Rogers Center and for Department President's project for Parkinson's Disease.

A thank-you note was received from Jefferson Elementary School in Cape Girardeau for the school supplies and gifts for their Christmas Gift Shop.

Feb. 2 is the date for the 14th District Meeting in Poplar Bluff, Mo. Cape Girardeau ladies will carpool at noon from Town Plaza Shopping Center.

The next meeting will be Feb. 12 at Grace United Methodist Church.

The meeting was dismissed by Barbara Yallaly.

Eastside Homemakers

The Eastside Homemakers Club met at Riverside Regional Library on Jan. 17. The constitution of the club was read by Violet Reynolds.

The group made out yearbooks for the new year.

The Feb. 20 meeting will be at 11 a.m. at Delmonico's Restaurant in Jackson.

Zonta Club

The Zonta Club of Cape Girardeau met at Saffron Restaurant on Jan. 7. The program was given by Jean Schlichter on Amelia Earhart in honor of her involvement in Zonta.

Nancy Jernigan of the United Way gave a presentation on getting youth involved in volunteerism, United Way efforts and pertinent city voting issues.

It was decided to purchase 20 smoke detectors for young mothers in the Mentoring Partnership Program.

Upcoming events include painting a room at the Family Resource Center in honor of Dr. C.J. Ritter, Trivia Night fund-raising for Habitat for Humanity, and a valentines party for residents at the Missouri Veterans Home.

Town & Country FCE

The Town & Country FCE Club met Jan. 9 at Cedar Street for a birthday party and meeting. There were eight members present.

The bylaws and constitution were read, and a change will be made in February to elect officers in August instead of October.

All Clubs Day will be held March 24, and Town & Country will host the event to be held at the County Extension office.

Members turned in their volunteer hours for 2002.

Leader training meeting will be held March 31.

Shirley Heise and Norma Schrieber are in charge of getting gifts for the Lutheran Home in February.

The club will have dinner at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Pizza Inn in Cape Girardeau.

Tune Out Violence pledge sheets are due April 5. Mary Klaproth has completed the club reports for 2002. A pound auction was held as a moneymaking project. Secret pal birthday gifts were exchanged.

The next meeting will be at the home of Klaproth at 7 p.m. Feb. 13.

Wondermakers Club

The Wondermakers Club met at the home of June Landgraf for the January meeting. The hostess read a devotion, "Wishing for Enough." The program for 2003 was planned. It will be approved at the next meeting.

Plans were made to take sweethearts out to eat for Valentine's Day.

The next meeting will be Feb. 13 at the home of Dorothy Lichtenegger. The program will be on volunteering.

The Alpha Mu Master chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met Jan. 13 with Marilyn Schwab serving as hostess and Linda Metheny as co-hostess.

President Carole Calvin presided over a short business meeting. A vote was taken for the Valentine Queen, which will be announced at the annual All Chapter Valentine Party to be held at 6 p.m., Feb. 12, in the Family Life Center at Centenary United Methodist Church.

A monetary donation will be given to Chromosome 18 Registry Research Society in honor of Hunter Ross, son of Sandy Ross, a Beta Sigma Phi member. He suffers from a rare disorder involving the 18th chromosome.

Joyce Hays, vice president, conducted the pledge training for new member Bernie Gardner.

Mary Schwab gave an interesting program on hummingbirds.

Hays won the swaparoo drawing and secret sister gifts were exchanged.

The next meeting will be Monday, in the home of Metheny. A pledge training session will be held at 6:30 p.m. with the regular meeting beginning at 7 p.m.

Exchange Club

The Exchange Club of Cape Girardeau met Jan. 7 at Port Cape Girardeau.

Kathline Ruopp presented the program on the dos and don'ts of staying healthy.

Members were thanked for participating in the bell ringers program during December.

The next Youth of the Month program has been rescheduled from Feb. 4, to Feb. 18. Spouses are invited to this meeting.

The next meeting will be Feb. 4.
