The American Legion Auxiliary met Jan. 12 for a lunch prepared by Muriel Day and Fern Schlimme. Barbara Yallaly read the minutes from the December meeting and Myrna Powers read the treasurer's report. Betty Cato presided over the meeting.
Correspondence included thank-you notes from the Alzheimer's Association, James S. McDonnell USD, Red Star Baptist Church and David Wulfers, son of Lawana Wulfers. A certificate of appreciation was presented to Louis K. Juden Unit 63 from the National American Legion for a generous gift given to the American Legion Child Welfare foundation. The foundation, now in its 50th year, recently awarded $585,275 to 19 not-for-profit organizations. A letter was read from the Children's Miracle Network. Two hospitals in St. Louis benefit from donations to care for children living within a 350-mile radius.
Vergie Templeton, Sunshine chairman, reported she had sent out get-well cards, sympathy cards and birthday cards. Americanism chairman, Peggy Blaylock, announced the legion would be sponsoring a Brownie troop. A monetary donation will be sent and Blaylock will be taking refreshments and items they may need for projects.
Marilyn Ritter, education chairman, and Blaylock will work together asking students to participae in the Americanism Essay Contest.
Buddy Poppy Day has been set for May 13. The club will order 2,500 poppies. Money will be sent to the department for six girls to go to Girls State in June.
On Christmas day, Edna Smith and Gerri Stone took gifts to 72 veterans residing at various nursing homes.
The next meeting will be Feb. 9. The district meeting will be Feb. 13 in Poplar Bluff, Mo.
Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158 met Dec. 14 with Gary Kamp, commander, presiding. Larry Koehler introduced Lori Launhardt, an accountant at the Missouri Veterans Home. She talked about qualifying for admission to the home.
Jack Latimer announced the Americanism Citation from the National Americanism Commission and Kamp announced the certificate of Meritorious Service for fifth place Eastern District from the Department of Missouri. Richard Aguilar gave the financial report. It was approved. Bill Poe announced that the annual birthday banquet will be held March 17.
David Ludwig, Americanism chairman, thanked those who participated in the Veterans Day parade and announced interviews for Boys State will be held soon. Bill Sullivan gave the club-room report.
A second vote was taken to donate $1,500 for Christmas presents for residents of the Missouri Veterans Home. It was approved.
Koehler reported that the Civil Patrol needs sponsors. He made a motion that the post contribute $100. The motion was seconded and passed. Latimer made a motion that the post purchase a computer program to be used for club-room business at a cost of $200. The motion was seconded and passed.
Kamp informed members about the placing of the Missouri battle flag on the grave of Col. William Jeffers, who served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War and is buried in Jackson City Cemetery. The flag will be furnished by the Missouri League of the South.
A thank-you card was read from Barb Yallaly for the post's donation to the Missouri Veterans Home.
The Arnsberg 4-H club met Jan. 6, at the home of Dustin Oehl. There were 17 members, four leaders and five guests in attendance. Emily Ruch, president, led the meeting. Cody Hahs led the pledges.
The club received a thank-you card from Corrie Burger who is one of the soldiers in Iraq that was sent a Christmas card. Oehl reported on his poultry and computer meetings and Ryan Pohlman reported on his welding meeting. The club discussed their annual box supper which will take place at the next meeting. One hundred dollars of the proceeds will be donated to the new 4-H building at the SEMO District Fairgrounds.
Ethan Seyer did an illustrated talk on the items needed for showing a steer at the fair.
The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. on Feb. 3 at Trinity Lutheran Hall in Friedheim.
The Town and Country FCE Club met Thursday at Grecian Steak House for their annual all-club birthday party and pound auction. Shirley Heise, president, presided over the meeting. The club has selected the following organizations for their 2005 community projects: Cottonwood Treatment Center, The Lutheran Home and Jackson Ministerial Alliance Food Pantry.
A donation was given toward the new 4-H building to be built at Arena Park in Cape Girardeau.
Margie McAnally and Carolyn Thompson read letters from servicemen in the military in reply to the club's Troop Fan Mail project in December. Doris Wilkerson, sponsored by Norma Schrieber, was welcomed as a new member of the club.
Club out will be at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 27 at Cracker Barrel in Cape Girardeau, and the next meeting will be at 7 p.m. on Feb. 10 at the home of Mary Klaproth.
The Cape Girardeau County Chapter of AARP No. 4041 met Jan. 3 at Saxony Manor. Members were given a tour of the facility after the lunch and meeting.
During the meeting it was reported that the Christmas wrap at Blanchard and Jefferson elementary schools were a success.
