If you are between the ages of 18 and 24 and have about 10-months to spare, the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps could use your help.

AmeriCorps is accepting applications from people interested in its national service program. To receive an application, call 1-800-942-2677. The deadline is May 3.

The program is different from the one based at Southeast Missouri State University.

The national civilian community corps has an age range and requires relocating to specific areas, said Michael Harris, local AmeriCorps director. It is also run at a national level instead of being filtered through the state.

After being accepted into the civilian corps program, volunteers will be sent to campuses in Charleston, S.C., San Diego, Calif., Perry Point, N.D., and Denver, Colo.

During their 10 months on the job, volunteers will work in teams to improve rural and urban parks, conduct public safety workshops and provide emergency disaster relief when needed.

AmeriCorps volunteers typically work in four different areas: environment, education, public safety, disaster relief and meeting human needs.

More than 25,000 members serve in 1,100 communities nationwide through the program. Each volunteer receives a living allowance and $4,725 to help pay for their education or student loans.
