The city will celebrate its fourth year on the Internet on Friday.
The city went online at a grand opening June 1, 1997.
The Jackson Web site was developed jointly between the city and chamber of commerce.
With the support of local businesses, the Web site has grown to include bulletin boards and an interactive calendar of events.
Visitors to the Web site include people seeking information about local businesses and events, newcomers to city, past Jacksonians looking for friends online, citizens to voice opinions on local issues and visitors from about 50 different countries.
To commemorate this anniversary, the administrator FAQulty and Staff has released a new interface for the Web site at jackson.com. Visitors can find easy access from any page to the calendar, the bulletin boards, and links to the local businesses who support the Jackson Web, as well as city services and local tourism.
"The most exciting change has been the interactive calendar," said Lisa Smith, a representative for FAQulty and Staff. "We can issue a login ID and password to those wishing to use the calendar for their organization's activities. Users can add, edit and delete calendar events from any Internet connection."
Those wishing to request a password can call or send an e-mail message. Birthday or anniversary greetings can be submitted by sending a detailed e-Visitors to the numerous bulletin boards can make postings. Boards established include: Help Wanted; Items for Sale; Class Reunions; Find A Friend; Sound Off; and others. Messages are monitored and are subject to removal if containing inappropriate language.
Suggestions are taken for new boards as well.
With the increasing support of the community, the Web site's growth continues.
"We look forward to the 10th anniversary," said Smith. "Since the Internet continues to expand our possibilities, we hope to incorporate effective new community services to the Web site over the years to come."
Since inception, the Web site has provided free Web pages to local civic organizations, schools and churches.
People with questions about the Web site can contact the site by phone at 243-1229, by e-mail through webmaster@jacksonmo.com, or by mail to P. O. Box 370, Jackson, MO 63755.
