More air traffic at the Cape Girardeau Regional Airport can boost both local revenue and state and federal grants to the city.
More planes flying into the airport means pilots will buy fuel, eat meals at the airport restaurant and spend time in the city. It also means more passengers are arriving and leaving on flights.
More than 10,390 passengers boarded planes at the airport in 1999, according to a report from the Missouri Department of Transportation. That increase entitles the airport to more grant funding, said Bruce Loy, airport manager.
The Cape Girardeau City Council will consider an ordinance tonight that offers the city financial assistance for operating its air traffic control tower. The council meets at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall, 401 Independence.
The grant agreement between the Missouri Highway and Transportation Commission and the city would allow for $125,000 in state funds to be used in operating the air tower. The grant pays half the costs, up to $125,000 for running the tower.
Under the program, the money would be reimbursed to the city for operating costs between July 1 and June 30, 2001. The state grant funding is only available to cities that are currently funding their own tower operations.
The Cape Girardeau Regional Airport lost its tower funding in 1995 because there were not enough flights coming into the airport to warrant it.
Another grant application submitted by the city would pay for an updated airport layout plan. The city is requesting $84,000 to update its current plan.
The city would have to pay 10 percent of that amount, which is included in the airport's current budget, Loy said.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the Missouri Department of Transportation offer the grant for capital improvement projects. In order to meet some state and federal requirements, the airport is periodically required to update its layout plan.
The current airport layout plan is 10 years old. The plan should be a summary of capital improvement projects based on an analysis of future general aviation and commercial air service.
