Gordonville Road, from Independence Street south to Edgewood Drive, will be closed to traffic for the next several months, starting Monday, in preparation for construction of a roundabout.

That section of road is expected to reopen in November, weather permitting, city officials said.

Residents along the affected stretch of Gordonville Road will be able to access their homes from the south, officials said.

The city plans to build a roundabout at the Independence Street/Gordonville Road/East Rodney Drive intersection.

City officials said the project is designed to improve traffic flow at the busy intersection.

A federal grant will cover 80 percent of the $741,000 project.

The remaining 20 percent will be funded with money from the city’s transportation trust fund sales tax.

The Independence Street/East Rodney Drive portion of the intersection will remain open to traffic through the end of the SEMO District Fair. The fair runs Sept. 9 through 17.

Officials said the entire intersection will be closed to traffic for construction of the roundabout, starting around Sept. 19. It will remain closed for a maximum of 60 days, officials said.

Once completed, the roundabout is expected to handle about 15,000 vehicles a day, with the potential to accommodate up to 25,000 vehicles daily, officials said.
