City releases schedule for fall leaf pickup

The city of Cape Girardeau has announced its annual fall leaf pickup plans, which start Nov. 13.

State law bans leaves from landfills. Cape Girardeau residents are encouraged to mulch or compost leaves and yard waste if possible, those unable to do so have three other options for disposing of leaves:

• Bring them to the city's recycling center, 2007 Southern Expressway, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.
• Take them to the city's compost holding area, on Third Street just off LaCruz, across from Kastens Masonry (at the old Central Packing Plant location) from noon to 4 p.m. weekdays or 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays, through the third Saturday in December, weather permitting. Those leaves will be offered to city residents later, as free compost.
• Rake leaves to the curb before the week specified in the following zones:

Nov. 13 to 16: A, south of Broadway, west of Kingshighway.

Nov. 19 to 23: B, north of Broadway, east of North and West Cape Rock Drive.

Nov. 26 to 30: C, west of Kings-highway.

Dec. 3 to 7: D, north of Kingshighway and North Cape Rock Drive; west of West Cape Rock Drive.

Other cities

In Jackson, the Department of Public Works has pickup schedule during the first full week of each month. Residents can dispose of yard waste, from leaves and grass clippings to brush and branches, starting Monday.

The leaves need to be bagged and tree limbs or brush bundled in 4-foot lengths, according to Leisa Floyd, customer service representative for Jackson's public works department.

"Set your yard waste out on your regular trash pickup day, but set it apart from your regular trash," she said.

In place of seasonal pickup dates, Scott City offers a year-round drop-off site, said Tina Blattel, the city collector.

"You have to pick up a permit at city hall," Blattel said. "There's no fee. We just want to be certain that's it's our residents dropping things off."

The permit is valid for one year. Scott City's public works site is open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at 1011 Rose Con Road.
