The city could be a cleaner city after residents haul away old furniture and appliances and clean the empty paint cans and yard chemicals from their basements.
The city will hold a fall cleanup week, beginning Monday. Residents must haul items to the city's transfer station at 2500 S. Sprigg St., between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Limbs, grass clippings and leaves must be kept separate from trash items and should be taken to the compost holding area on Third Street just off LaCruz Street.
Loads hauled to the transfer station or compost area must be covered.
On Oct. 14, there will be a household hazardous waste collection from 8 to noon at the 4-H Shelter at Arena Park. Residents can dispose of cleaning chemicals, paints and other items at the shelter.
Pam Sander, city solid waste coordinator, said the fall cleanup isn't as large as the spring one when city crews collect items.
The hazardous waste collection, however, has been a popular service, she said.
The city contracts Safety-Kleen Corp. to dispose of hazardous waste items.
The city paid $15,000 for the disposal service last year.
The Fire Department has information on disposing smoke detectors and fire extinguishers; some businesses will haul old tires.
