City officials approved licenses for three Cape Girardeau package liquor stores Monday night.

The City Council approved liquor licenses for Kidd II, 103 N. Kingshighway; Albertson's, 2126 Independence; and Albertson's Express, 2134 Independence.

All are new businesses. Kidd II, managed by Ernestine Kidd, received a conditional license.

Albertson's and Albertson's Express, both managed by Mark Lamont, are being built on property formerly occupied by Sides Metal Recycling and Wolohan Lumber.

All licenses were approved for package and Sunday liquor sales.

The council also renewed a lease agreement with Drury Southwest Signs to retain two billboards on airport property near Interstate 55.

The matter was before the council at its Dec. 18 meeting, but council members were concerned about the length of the lease and that the rent the city would receive was too little.

The revised lease is for five years at $2,400 a year, with one five-year renewal option and a 10-percent increase in rental for that period.

Billboard property leases along I-55 near the airport range between $1,000 and $1,200 a year, with one double-decker sign at the Scott City interchange costing $1,440 a year. All Drury Southwest signs within the city limits lease for about $1,200 a year.

Additionally, the council will change the name of Hopper Road on a new alignment between Mount Auburn Road and Kage Road to Old Hopper Road. The new alignment is expected to be opened by mid- February, and the ordinance will take effect at Feb. 16.

The name of the street will automatically be changed in post office computers so residents will not have to complete change-of-address forms.
