This week is Cleanup/Fix-up week in Jackson. This semi-annual service gives everyone in Jackson an opportunity to get rid of items at the curbside that normally would not be picked up. Leave your unwanted items out at the curbside on your normal pick-up day and our city employees will pick them up. If you have any questions about this free pick-up call our Public Works department at 243-2300.
Last Friday was the official grand opening and dedication of our new Jackson Re-cycling Center. We expect to take in more than double the recyclable material this year than we did a year ago. We hope everyone will take advantage of our new facility and help our environment at the same time.
The city of Jackson will soon be going into Cyberspace on the internet. May 1 was the target date for our web site to be introduced to the public. June 1 is the date that we expect the web site to be fully completed. More than 100 pages will be available to everyone to find out about Jackson. Everything from city government, service clubs, churches, schools, industrial development and almost anything else you want to know about Jackson will be available on this web site. The web site will be updated on a regular basis to keep up with our growing town.
It was my pleasure to once again be a part of the annual Mayor's prayer breakfast held recently at the Show-Me Center. Another large crowd attended from Jackson, Cape and the surrounding area to give thanks and once again listen to great message delivered by Mr. Ted DeMoss. Its great that our communities can come together each year for this event.
The City of Jackson will soon put two handicap accessible parking spots in the middle of the block in front of City Hall on Court Street. We felt there was a shortage of handicap parking spots for City Hall and nearby business customers. We hope this will make it little more convenient for people to do their business on Court Street.
The Jackson and Cape Optimist Clubs recently held its annual Youth in Government Day. This is a fun and educational day for both the students and the local officials. The students learn how the various offices are ran and we learn from the ideas that students give us during the day. Thanks to the Optimist Clubs for giving the students and the local officials a chance to learn from each other.
The City Council re-organized for a new term Monday. Along with myself, four councilman were sworn in for new terms. I continue to be honored to serve you, the citizens of Jackson. The Council and I value your ideas and suggestions to make Jackson a better place. Our town is growing and things at City Hall seem to be happening at a very rapid pace. It is a very challenging and rewarding time to be involved in city government. We will continue to work toward orderly growth, improved infrastructure, completion of many projects in progress and continue our progressive approach toward a future that will be bright for our children and grandchildren to live and work in Jackson. While working toward these goals we want to keep the friendly small town atmosphere that we have all enjoyed for many years.
The Council meets every Monday night at City Hall at 7:30 p.m. Your ideas and suggestions are always welcome.
