Mayor Jay Knudtson, left, honors Cape Girardeau city employees Randall Strong, Mike Backfisch and Patrick Swift at the city council meeting Monday for saving Stacey Beasley, right, when the machinery he was operating fell into La Croix Creek on Aug. 14 while working on the embankment under a Southern Expressway bridge. The cab fell in head first and immediately filled with water. The door would not open far enough for him to escape. Swift took a rock and broke the window, and he and the other employees helped Beasley to safety.
