Planning for emergencies in Cape Girardeau will be a little easier now that the city has filled a staff position designed to handle disasters.
The city hired Terry Fulk, who is pursuing a geography degree at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, to fill the vacant Project Impact Coordinator position.
Fulk is set to begin July 21. He will oversee Cape Girardeau's disaster mitigation projects and administer grant money from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
He is taking the spot vacated by Ann Elledge, who resigned in May to accept a job with the Cape County Health Department. Assistant City Manager Walter Denton has been the interim coordinator.
Fulk said he is excited about the new position and looks forward to serving the people of Cape Girardeau.
"Through building partnerships with businesses and other organizations, I believe we can make Cape a safer community against those natural hazards that we face," Fulk said.
