Plans to develop just less than 12 acres at the intersection of Bloomfield Road and South Mount Auburn Road moved ahead Tuesday night at the Cape Girardeau City Council.

The property, purchased by Mayson Investments LLC in March from Earl Norman, cleared the first hurdle when the council gave first-round approval to a request to rezone the property as a general commercial district. The property currently is split between residential and local commercial zoning. The council will vote again Sept. 15 to finalize the rezoning.

The council also approved creation of a three-lot subdivision at the south end of the property owned by Mayson Investments. Jeff Maurer, one of the principals in Mayson along with his father, Jim Maurer, said Tuesday evening he was not ready to announce any details of the development, except that it would have four lots fronting Mount Auburn Road and two larger lots adjacent to Interstate 55.

  • Gave first-round approval for a special-use permit allowing the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri to expand its operations at 2536 Boutin Drive. Jody Geiser, a member of the Humane Society board, told council members the proposed expansion would increase the available space for animals from 6,000 to 20,000 square feet. The current structure is in an area with residential zoning and the special use permit is required to expand the operation. The expansion work will require a capital campaign, which will begin soon, Geiser said. A second council vote is required to complete the process.
  • Gave first-round approval to a request from Boyce Church for a special-use permit to allow him to construct new office, warehouse and storage buildings on a strip of property at 1902 N. Kingshighway. The property extends from Kingshighway to the backyards of homes along Lynwood Hills Drive. Church wants to construct three storage shed buildings 40 feet wide by 100 feet long, four office or warehouse buildings of the same dimensions and one office-warehouse building 40 feet wide by 90 feet long.
  • Presented a proclamation declaring Oct. 3 as Science Day in Cape Girardeau. Jason Lindsey, the former KFVS12 weatherman who is now outreach coordinator for Hooked on Science, organized what was at that time the world's largest Mentos fountain display last year and accepted the proclamation from Mayor Jay Knudtson at the council meeting.
