A 4-inch natural gas line was broken while private utility crews worked in the area near the William Street and Mount Auburn Road intersection today.

The Cape Girardeau Fire Department has confirmed neighboring businesses are safe, according to a news release from the city of Cape Girardeau. The release also says Ameren Missouri was on scene quickly to begin repairing the gas line. Cape Girardeau police officers are routing traffic around a short single lane closure on northbound Mount Auburn just south of the William Street intersection.
