Area business leaders can tune in to a national seminar and learn leadership development without having to leave Cape Girardeau next month.
St. Andrew Lutheran Church on North Cape Rock Drive will sponsor a simulcast of a live seminar lead by best-selling author John Maxwell from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 11.
Athletes, authors and various other leadership experts will converge in Atlanta to play host to the event, which is anticipated to have more than 80,000 business professionals participating via satellite downlink in more than 500 cities across the United States, according to Mindy McNeill of customer services for Giant Impact, which was formerly known as Maximum Impact.
More than a decade ago, Maxwell created the organization to provide resources and training for personal and professional growth. Giant Partners in Oklahoma City, Okla., bought out Maximum Impact nearly two months ago, according to McNeill.
The local host, the Rev. Paul Short of St. Andrew, announced the event in a Feb. 8 release that said, "The speakers will illuminate certain qualities akin to their personal careers and experience and provide in-depth perspective on how to unleash the influential leadership power in yourself and those around you."
Short said the use of churches across the states is logical because of church officials' desire to provide support for business leaders in their communities, not to mention they have the equipment to host a live satellite presentation.
This will be the seventh year the company has simulcasted a day of leadership training, according to McNeill. This year's speakers include Terry Bradshaw, former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback; Herman Boone, inspirational high school football coach who was the subject of the 2000 movie "Remember the Titans"; and Tim Sanders, former chief solutions officer for Yahoo.com.
"The seminar is worthwhile for people not just in business, but anyone looking to grow within themselves and be able to achieve in their work place as well as their home," said Todd Ward, branch manager for Consolidated Insurance Agency in Cape Girardeau, who will attend the simulcast.
This is the second time St. Andrew Lutheran Church is hosting the event.
"Dr. John Maxwell's seminars are as good as they get in the leadership field with the quality, presentation and content," said Mark Martin, associate pastor of St. Andrew Lutheran Church.
Martin said the church has the capacity to hold 100 people, and he expects the pews will be full.
