A memorial service to recognize and remember the late Rev. S.S. Borum will be held Sunday at Bethany Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau.

Borum was a Southern Baptist minister who served as pastor and interim pastor at dozens of churches in Southeast Missouri and Illinois.

He died Jan. 1. The memorial service will coincide with Borum's birthday. He would have been 97 on Wednesday.

Last year Borum, who came to church the week before his birthday on a motorcycle, had said he'd come to church on horseback the following year.

The Rev. Donny Ford and Ray Leadbetter will start the memorial service at 9:15 a.m. when they arrive at Bethany on horseback.

Worship service will be at 10:40 a.m., followed by a potluck dinner. At 1:30 p.m., Ray and Jo Ann Leadbetter will present special music. A videotape of Borum preaching also will be played.

Borum had been a Southern Baptist minister since the 1930s. He attended Union University in Jackson, Tenn., and Southwest Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.

He was ordained in 1928 and helped begin congregations in Michigan and St. Louis during his career. He served as pastor at Red Star Baptist Church for seven years before retiring.

The public is invited to attend the service and share memories of Borum.
