The Christmas for the Elderly program is intended to help seniors who typically don't have a family, lack basic supplies and can't spend money to treat themselves to a Christmas.

Donations can be dropped off at the Southeast Missourian office at 301 Broadway and should include the identifying letter of their recipient.

Those who wish to donate cash or a check should make it payable to Christmas for the Elderly, P.O. Box 4, Cape Girardeau, Mo., 63702.

Mr. A, of Sikeston, Mo., lives alone without the support of any nearby family. He needs a little help with basic needs. Subject to seizures and blood clots, this elderly gentleman walks a lot, as he does not have a car. Tennis shoes, slip-on boots in a size 8 and socks would enable him to continue his pursuit of independent living. Mr. A is particularly interested in American history, especially American Indians and wars. Books full of pictures are the ones he likes best.

An electric razor or television would make an especially nice gift.

Other ideas include flannel shirts, pants, undergarments in an extra large, or standard size gloves. Full size sheets are also on his list.

Mr. B suffers from hypertension, arthritis, poor circulation, back problems and has poor balance. This Sikeston resident lives alone and sees his daughter, who lives in Texas, only once a year.

A television would help distract him from all the ailments he suffers from, but any gift would help him to understand there are individuals out there who really care.

Mr. B's small monthly check does not allow him to purchase some household items to help to keep his home clean and easy to manage. A vacuum and large, outdoor trash can with lid would be helpful for him to better maintain an easily navigable environment. Getting around easily is important because of his poor balance. Indoors, a 13-gallon trash can with lid, broom and dust pan and small dish drain with tub for the side of the sink are items that would help Mr. B live happily.

His clothing needs include size 8 shoes, size 32 pants, medium-sized gloves, a robe and boxer shorts.

Full size sheets, dish or hand towels and cleaning supplies would also be greatly appreciated.

Mr. C, of Cape Girardeau, lives alone in a one-bedroom apartment. A diabetic, this man also has had a stroke and suffers from high blood pressure, back problems and depression.

Primarily in need of clothing, Mr. C's Christmas wish list also includes socks, shoes and underwear. His shoe size is 13; his clothing size is 4X. His pant size is 52 by 30 and an extra large is needed in gloves.

His Christmas wishes include a small TV; a used set is fine. Other household item needs include pots, pans, dishes, bath and dish towels and cleaning supplies.
