Fred Vincel, Cape Girardeau Fire Department battalion chief, talks with children Sunday afternoon at the scene of an accident involving a 3-year-old boy and a car on South Ellis Street in Cape Girardeau. Cape Girardeau Police Sgt. Joey Hann said the 3-year-old was playing with friends on the east side of the street as a vehicle going north approached. The child ran out in the street. The vehicle tried to swerve and slow down, but struck the child. The child suffered only minor injuries but was taken by ambulance to Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau for further examination, Hann said. Hann said the driver would be issued summonses, but the infractions and the driver's identity were not released.
