CHARLESTON, Mo. -- The suspect in a Thursday shooting that injured a father and son in Charleston has been arrested in North Carolina, police reported Sunday.

Mark S. Mowery faces charges of first-degree assault, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon in connection with the shooting, which injured a 39-year-old Charleston man and his 10-year-old son, the Charleston Department of Public Safety reported Sunday.

Charleston police reported the shooting stemmed from an argument over the use of fireworks early Thursday evening near Ironbanks and Swank streets.

The victims were taken to a hospital where the father's injuries were listed as serious and the child's condition was listed as stable Thursday.

In a news release Sunday, Charleston DPS director Robert Hearnes said the victims' conditions were improving.

Mowery was in the custody of the Veterans Affairs Police Department on Sunday, awaiting extradition to Missouri, Hearnes reported.
