CHARLESTON - Jim Blumenberg, presiding commissioner, proposed that Mississippi County obtain a temporary fuel reserve tank and stockpile 12,000-15,000 gallons for the road and bridge department and law enforcement in preparation for the year 2000 during Thursday's commission meeting.

Martin Lucas, commissioner, said a survey of major cities had only listed two as prepared, with several indicating they planned to be ready in time.

According to Lucas, computer chips with the Y2K glitch were a common, stock item that was used because of wide availability in many mundane, non-date related electronic devices, such as automatic doors, supermarket scales and cooling units.

Blumenberg said he believed many people were not taking the risk seriously, and that for many people, not being prepared was "going to be a big inconvenience."
