Charges added against man accused in Cape business burglaries

A Cape Girardeau man in police custody on charges of burglary and stealing from local businesses is now facing new charges.

Scott W. Pierce, 30, has been charged with two additional counts of second-degree burglary and stealing in connection with break-ins at homes in Cape Girardeau County, according to an amended complaint filed Thursday by the Cape Girardeau County Prosecuting Attorney's office.

The amended complaint alleges that on Monday, Pierce entered a home at 207 Kelley Court and stole jewelry and guns from the residence, and further alleges that on Wednesday, Pierce entered a home at 2756 Oakshire Circle and stole jewelry, a cellphone and a power tool.

Sgt. Eric Friedrich of the Cape Girardeau Police Department said Thursday that Pierce had been seen at one of the homes "and one thing led to another."

Pierce had originally been charged with two counts of second-degree burglary and stealing on Wednesday after he allegedly confessed to his role in the November burglaries of Whiskey River, 1444 Independence St., and Rhymer's on the Plaza, 10 S. Plaza Way. According to a probable-cause statement prepared by the Cape Girardeau Police Department, Pierce told police that he forced out a board in a window at Whiskey River before taking about $500 from the register and from a back room. The statement also says that Pierce admitted that he broke glass on a side door and remembered taking about $180 from a cash register at nearby Rhymer's.

Online court filings show Pierce has an initial arraignment set for Dec. 31 and that he is being represented by F. Patrick Davis of Cape Girardeau. He is being held in the Cape Girardeau County Jail in lieu of a $25,000 cash-only bond.
