A lecture by Barbara Woods, director of the African American Studies Institute at St. Louis University, will be presented Thursday on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University as part of Southeast's Black History Month celebration.

The event is scheduled for 4 p.m. in the University Center Missouriana Room and is open to the public.

Woods will lecture on "The Changing Faces of Africana Women," a presentation that will focus on the current socio-economic issues and cultural challenges facing Africana women and girls. The discussion will examine their impact on the family and the community and recommendations for action will be offered.

She is a member of Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in Black America Regional/Local. She has served on several boards and received numerous awards including the Outstanding Advisor of the Year Award from St. Louis University in 1993.

She has been nominated twice for the Nancy McNeir Ring Outstanding Faculty Award at St. Louis University. Woods has taught a number of courses including "Black Women in Society," "Contemporary Black America," and "Civil Rights Era/Leaders." Woods has also been active in several community activities including Leadership St. Louis; the board of commissioners of the St. Louis Art Museum; the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis; the Advisory Committee of Youth Leadership St. Louis; and the board of directors of the St. Louis Support Group Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change.

Woods earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Kansas. She received her master's degree and doctoral degree from St. Louis University.
